Titles Comprise:

The Talons Of Weng-Chiang: In this feature-length adventure set deep in the darkest heart of Victorian London, the Doctor and Leela are confronted by a series of bizarre and horrific events. An innocent cabbie is viciously slain by the agents of a secret Chinese cult; young women disappear quietly and suddenly; in the depths below, the rankest sewers are infested by giant, deadly abominations. The Doctor, helped only by the local pathologist Professor Litefoot and the cowardly Henry Jago, finds himself battling for his life against the hideously deformed Magnus Greel, who pretends to be the ancient Chinese God, Weng-Chiang. But Greel is not the only menace; the Doctor must also deal with the illusionist Li H'sen Chang and the murderous dwarf Mr Sin before Leela falls prey to the Talons of Weng-Chiang.

The Caves Of Androzani: Captured for arms-running on the mining planet of Androzani Minor, the Doctor and Peri are under sentence of death. Then a mysterious masked intruder comes to their aid. But is Sharaz Jek, master android creator, really their saviour? The rulers of the planet are certainly desperate for his head. Then again, he does control the only supply of Spectrox and it is this substance which men are prepared to die for...

Doctor Who: The Movie: It is December 31st, 1999. But will the World survive to see the 21st Century? Deep in the heart of San Francisco's Chinatown, a young boy is about to lose his life in a hail of bullets. But the gunfire finds a different target - a stranger who steps out of a British Police Box. Dr Grace Holloway does all she can but cannot save him or understand the mysteries that surround him. Who is this unknown traveller with two hearts? Why has his body disappeared? And who is the madman who appeals for help; claiming to be both the dead man and a time traveller known only as the Doctor? Elsewhere in San Francisco, another time traveller is on the verge of death. For the Master, the Doctor's oldest adversary, survival entails taking over the Doctor's newly-regenerated body. Meddling with the heart of the Doctor's TARDIS he condemns the Earth to destruction at the stroke of midnight, December 31st. As the crowds prepare to celebrate the Millennium, Grace is caught in a desperate race against time to help save the Doctor - and mankind...

I was a little confused like many fans at this box set reissue. Now first of all the star rating I have based on the value not the stories that are contained in the set. Firstly the Movie, I was hoping for a 5.1 mix of the soundtrack but alas just stereo, and the picture quality is almost the same. The extras are great however, and a commentary by Paul McGann, the other extras include is the Blue Peter stories and how the programme kept who alive. One thing is true in hind sight now everyone realized what a mistake it was to have a regeneration story half way through and how interesting it was that the BBC did not want it and it was the american half of the production. Caves again not much different with the story and again, it would have been nice to have a 5.1 soundtrack considering the cost of this set. The documentary is very good however. Talons was a strange one to re issue as it was not one of the first stories released. OK you get 3 discs now two with extras, but the same commentary as the original. All in all if you have these stores apart from the extras there is nothing special here. You have to as is 28.00 worth it for the extras this is a missed opportunity to at leat make the soundtrack of two of the stories better.

 Excellent reissue

Three superb releases upgraded in terms of picture quality - most especially so for Talons of Weng-Chiang - and accompanied by some of the best extra features in the entire range. The Wildnerness Years documentary on the Movie is worth the price of admission alone, and it is great to finally have a commentary from Paul McGann. The Talons extras are comprehensive, although I would have liked a Tom Baker commentary at last, and the main Caves documentary is good, although - overall - this is the least well served story on the set. To answer a criticism of the previous review, 5.1 soundtracks were sadly not possible for any of these releases, so it is a little churlish to criticise the BBC for not including them. The movie's soundtrack materials are not held by the BBC (all materials are needed to create a complete 5.1 soundtrack) and the same is true, I believe, of Caves. In the main, then, this is a worthy release, although why we couldn't have had the earliest DVD releases "revisited" first (a special edition of Robots of Death is sorely needed) is anyone's guess. It's as if they are being deliberately perverse!
