Play.com's favourite serial killer finds a very disturbing ally in Season 3. Dexter's desire to become a family man derails when he starts working with highly respected DA Miguel Prado (Jimmy Smits), a charming and powerful lawyer on the surface, but a dark and deranged would-be murderer underneath.

To all around him, blood splatter analyst Dexter Morgan appears to be a perfect gentleman and respected member of the police force but, behind this convincing facade, Dexter harbours a terrifying secret. He is a serial killer.

The Emmy-nominated series returns for an all-new season - and this time Dexter's got a new take on taking life. Having faced some of his darkest demons, Dexter's ready to put the past behind him. Now, with family life, a day job catching kills and an uncontrollable urge to do away with the ones that get away, Dexter's got his work cut out for him. And when a high-profile case sides him with powerful Assistant DA Miguel Prado, the pressure might be too great for even our most beloved serial killer.

 Better than season 2

Having been blown away by season 1 of Dexter, and dissapointed by season 2, I was hoping for a great season 3 to get things back on track. The good news is that it's better than season 2 in many ways. Bad news, it's not as good as season 1.

The writers have repeated the mistake of season 2 by placing a "new character" opposite Dexter as his wavering "friend or foe". At least this time around it's a man, and the whole "fatal attraction" thing is left aside. The play-off between Dexter and Prado has potential but ultimately feels a bit lacklustre.

This season's serial killer (The "Skinner") is very weak in comparison to the Ice Truck Killer (or indeed Bay Harbour Butcher) and their identity is a bit of a let-down to be honest.

A lot more screen time is given to Dexter's colleagues this time around, and it feels like a proper police drama at times, but then other times it feels like a soap opera, with romance and love being major themes. Oddly, some of those soap opera moments work better than the Dexter moments.

I am slightly irritated by the apparent "personality transplant" of some characters since season 1. LaGuerta was a flirtatious bubbly woman in s1, but now she's a tortured and serious officer. Rita was a troubled woman with huge mental issues in s1, but now she's a radiant mother without a care in the world. No trace of her original character seems to remain. And that's annoying.

Worth seeing for continuity. I'm ready for season 4 now.

 Amazing

The first 2 series of Dexter have been gripping and interesting throughout once you start watching you have to carry on to find out whats going to happen to him next. An unexpected hero. My only grumble is that season 3 is taking forever to come out on dvd!

 BRILLIANT

Absolutely fantastic, seen them all, watched next seasons which isnt out yet on the computer and i am not disappointed whatsoever. The best tv programme by far, i've got the entire family well and truly addicted to it.

A More Personal but no Less Intense Narrative

After a fantastic ending to the second season hopes were high for the third and yet again the writers and cast deliver. This time around the show focuses more heavily on Dexter's gradually evolving character and desire to be accepted by someone for who he really is.

This certainly makes season three different as many of the major developments involve Dexter's personal life but it is no less intense and entertaining as a result.
