Sumptuous costume drama Downton Abbey, written and created by Academy Award winner Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park, The Young Victoria) boasts an all-star cast featuring Hugh Bonneville, Maggie Smith, Elizabeth McGovern, Michelle Dockery, Dan Stevens, PenelopeWilton, Jim Carter, Phyllis Logan, Siobhan Finneran, Joanne Froggatt, Rob James-Collier and Brendan Coyle. This prestigious ensemble brings the world of Downton to life with splendour and passion.

Set in England in the years leading up to the First World War, Downton Abbey tells the story of a complicated community. The house has been home to the Crawley family for many generations, but it is also where their servants live, and plan, and dream, and they are as fiercely jealous of their rank as anyone. Some of them are loyal to the family and committed to Downton as a way of life, others are moving through, on the look out for betterment or love or just adventure. The difference is that they know so many of the secrets of the family, while the family know so few of theirs.

But for all the passions that rage beneath the surface, this is a secure world, serene and ordered, and, at first glance, it seems it will last forever. Little do they know, family or staff, that the clouds of the conflict that will change everything are already gathering over their heads.

At first when I saw this I did not think I was going to like it I thought it would be boring and uninteresting but by the time the first episode had ended it was brillant much better than I thought and the acting is great.

Downton Abbey is a 2010 British television period drama series, produced by British media company Carnival Films. It was created and principally written by the great Oscar-winning writer Julian Fellowes.

Set in the fictional Downton Abbey, the stately home of the Earl of Grantham, early in the reign of King George V, during the two years prior to the Great War, it follows the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants.

It is reported to be the most successful British period drama since Brideshead Revisited and although there is good attention to detail, it gives a very romantacised view of aristocratic life both above and below stairs.

 Best thing on tv yet!!!!

Only saw a couple of episodes while it was on television, but liked what I saw! Once I got the dvd, I was hooked!!!! There are so many characters that you love or dislike, and the plot to the story is very good! Really can't wait for season 2!

Truly brilliant - the best thing on television.

What a fabulous DVD set this is for what was the best thing to come on television in 2010. This boxset looks great on the shelf and features all seven episodes of Downton Abbey season one.

Witty, sharp, beautifully filmed and acted by Britain's finest talents, this boxset will keep you on the edge of your seat on Sunday evening for hours.
