In my opinion, this is one of Disney's best films - alongside The Lion King, Tarzan and Mulan. I saw this film for the first time the year that it was released in cinemas and I have loved it ever since. My little brother was three years old when the film was released and he absolutely adored it. Now that I am old enough to appreciate the more adult humour in some of the parts of the film, I can appreciate the film ever more as a whole. I find that that is the best thing about Disney films - the children aren't MEANT to understand everything first time round. It gives the adults something to enjoy. And it creates a timelessness for the film because when the child ages (like I have), they will appreciate everything they hadn't understood when they were younger.
An amazing film, dark, funny and fantastic. From the songs and laughs for children, to the dark and mature themes for adults, the film is a most for any disney fan, i know it sits pride a place among my disney collection.
Enjoyable but at times quite heavy for younger children.
My 5 year old peeked between fingers and my 7 year old was in tears at one point.
Still they enjoyed it at the end and the nightmares stopped after a couple of weeks!
This film certainly contrasts the Disney of today. The Hunchback of Notre Dame is complete with outstanding animation, a set of beautifully composed and performed songs, and a collection of characters who you cannot forget easily.
This film is a mixture of dark and light, drama and comedy, highlighted by villain Frollo and the gargoyles. It is exquisitely made and will appeal to some adults due to its mature nature. Kids will also love it, however, due to the songs and characters such as the gargoyles and the delightful Clopin, leader of the gypsies.
Definately a must see whatever age you are, and if you have already read the book.
A gritty, emotional and yet beautiful film from Disney.
Quasimodo has been kept in the Notre Dame Cathedral since birth after Lord Frollo was shamed by the priest into looking after the son of a gypsy woman he killed. As somebody who looks different to others, Quasimodo yearns to experience the outside world and during the Festival of Fools, this yearning is too strong to ignore, despite being forbidden to ever leave the bell tower. Although he is caught whilst at the festival by Frollo, Quasimodo also meets the beautiful gypsy Esmeralda. This persecuted woman starts to play a big role in the life of Quasimodo and changes his world forever.
This film is dramatic yet gripping. With undercurrents of prejudice and justice running through it, the Hunchback of Notre Dame was made for children but teaches those of all ages a lesson.
