More than a hero. A legend.

Based on Eric Knight's 1938 novel about the most trustworthy of pooches, Lassie Come Home, the film is set on the eve of World War II in a Yorkshire mining town in northern England. The Carraclough family fall on hard times and have to sell Lassie to the Duke of Rudling (Peter O'Toole). Transported to the Duke's remote castle in the north of Scotland, Lassie is determined to escape from the clutches of the Duke and his evil trainer, in an effort to make her way home for Christmas and return to the family she loves...

A cracking kids film with some marvelous overacting

| | See all Littleskink's reviews (2)

We first encountered this in a holiday cottage we rented last Christmas, it rained a lot so we put this on the telly one wet afternoon. After that our kids pestered us every day to watch it again and again and again ! They are 3 1/2 and 1 1/2 but this works as a good film up to 8 or 9 I would guess.

It's ok for grown ups first time through but Peter O'Toole really does go a bit OTT sometimes - in a funny way, not a bad way. It also helps if you have seen the original Lassie as the plot here does one or two strange jumps. Some people have complained about the swearing but can't say I had noticed until it was pointed out. And there are two tough issues that our eldest wanted to understand. One is about how come we could can 'own' (and sell) a dog who is part of the family, but not sell her little sister. The other involves the killing of a dog half way through the film, which I think older children may find pretty upsetting

We now have in our house all three original Lassie films too but this one remains by far and away the most popular with our kids, for the money you just cant go wrong
