Suburbanites Steve (Nelson) and Diane (Williams) suddenly experience paranormal activity in their home. What begins as minor excitement quickly turns into nasty ghostly encounters. The disappearance of their daughter Carol Anne (O'Rourke) forces the Freelings to bring in parapsychologists and a professional exorcist to exorcise their home. Directed by Tobe Hooper and featuring Oscar Nominated Visual Effects by Richard Edlund, Michael Wood and Bruce Nicholson, Poltergeist is one of the most entertaining horror films of its time.
  • The 2-part documentary "They Are Here: The Real World of Poltergeists Revealed"
  • Part I: "Science of the Spirits"
  • Part II: "Communing with the Dead"

At last this much loved friendly friendly chiller is out on DVD after over 25 years from it's original release, but has it been worth the wait?
The film is still as good as ever.
The film feels almost whimsical at first, as the spirtis play stack to chair games in the Freeling Family kitchen of there new suburban home. You can almost feel producer Spielberg's fingers all over the first twenty minutes.
The things turn darker as storm clouds start to gather, the tree attacks and little Carol Ann is whisked into a spectral void via her TV. Not even Derick and his imaginary friend Sam off TV's Most Haunted could deal with this! The film is never frightening, but it still has the sense of wounder it had when I first watched it as a Teenager. The only really scary bit in the film is the Midget medium with the childs voice and the attack of the clown doll(Midgets and clowns are a thing of nightmares for me!).
The film is aimed more at a family audiance, but it is very, very entertaining.
What really lets this film down is the truly scary lack of special features, Surly after over 25 years this much loved chiller should give it's many fans somthing worth waiting for.
Worth buying, but some how not worth the wait due to the seriouse lack of extras!

 Excellent film...disappointing special edition

One of the greatest horror films of the 20th century. Excellently remastered for the DVD version but thats where the good points end. I don't understand why it took them so long in the first place to release it on DVD as the special features are rubbish.

No trailers, no making of, no deleted scenes, no commentary. The documentary about the curse of Poltergeist could have been an excellent addition instead we are left with a documentary which you could easily watch on the discovery channels. I am just hoping for another special edition to be released but I am not holidng my breath any time soon.

A true masterpiece, a film i can watch over and over...why did it take so long to be released?

 Superb!!

This is a true classic, i remember first watching it as a kid and i can nightmares for weeks after.

It has great atmosphere and some heart warming and touching moments, and like most films produced by Spielberg in the 80's it has a happy ending. One of those films you can watch over and over again.
