When war breaks out in the lull of summer 1914, it surprises and pulls millions of men in its wake. And Christmas arrives, with its snow and multitude of family and army bundles. But the surprise won't come from the inside the generous parcels which lie in the French, Scottish and German trenches.

That night, a momentous event will turn the destinies of four characters; A Scottish priest, a French lieutenant, an exceptional German tenor and the one he loves and sings with, a wonderful Danish soprano. They will find themselves at the heart of unprecedented fraternisations between German, British and French troops.

During that Christmas Eve, the unthinkable will happen: rifles will be left at the bottom of trenches and steps will be taken towards those opposite, to shake their hands, exchange a cigarette or a piece of chocolate, to wish them a "Merry Christmas".

I watched this film yesterday and it had the most profound affect on me over any film I have ever seen about the Great War. The story line was accurate and quite superb; the acting an the photography likewise. I was a child ing the late 1920*s and 1930*s and the film collects together the sheer waste of it all which I experienced , first hand, in the many men (and their families) who survived. It is close to being a masterpiece.

A great film both on war and the true Christmas spirit

Well, the title of my review says it all practically ... whatever critics say, this is a really remarkable and beautiful film!

It is really emotionally compelling throughout, especially when the Christmas truce begins. Viewers really feel the humanity of the characters and the meaning of Christmas, and true humanity, in general.

Near the end of the film, the poignant aspect of war is really well brought out, reminiscient of the sentiments expressed by Wilfred Owen in his poetry.

I personally don't care if the military aspect of the war is brought out (as some criticised) ... it's not the point. The suffering and relief is emotional, and so the film is emotional ... anyway, prepare for a real tear-jerker my friends, and Merry Christmas to all!

 Brilliant

I ask one question why hasn't this film won an oscar if it hasn't ???
I studied the first world war and this is the closest dramatical film to it ever. This film will make you weep, make you laugh and make you roar. I have never encountered such an emotional film in my life I cannot believe it has had such little press :O !!

 A masterpiece

This is a very powerful, poignant and sincere film that will move you in so many ways. Great casting, a subtle blend of humour and anger sprinkled through the pervasive sadness of the movie, and when you hear 'Forever, I'm Dreaming of Home' start up, the shivers will course up your spine. A great tribute to the war's heroes on both sides. Buy this film!
