This is another Sunday afternoon film, one to stir the deep emotions - which is exactly what it was made to do. This was a propaganda film made in 1942 when Britain was struggling with rationing and bad news after bad news from the 'front'. Churchill said that this film did for British morale more than several won battles. It simply stirred the soul.

The story is about England during the war with German invasion as a constant threat, air attacks and how it all affects people 'back home' in their daily life. Greer Garson is the personification of the British spirit and must have broken a few hearts in her career. As a wife and mother in war torn England, she shows how it should be done, even to the degree of 'capturing' a German fighter pilot.

Although the end is sad, very sad indeed, the way in which it stirs the depths is simply quite amazing. Perhaps because it is based upon every day events that the cinema goers of the time related to and consequently were encouraged to follow the characters example. Whatever the reason for its success is not important, the film itself will leave you feeling 'proud to be British'.

 A real tearjerker

This was a very powerful film which showed the bravery and strength of the British people living on the homefront facing bombings during world war 2.
The ending was incredibly sad and very moving. The acting was wonderful.

Mrs. Miniver is a 1942 drama starring the beautiful actress Greer Garson in the title role. It was based on a fictional English housewife created by Jan Struther in 1937 for a series of newspaper columns, and takes place at the start of the second world war. The film won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Director. It is of its time, but remains a powerful and deeply moving film, it was followed by the equally moving Miniver Story. Wonderful, and it is true, not a dry eye in the house.
