Tough-as-nails Blaise Starrett (Ryan) is about to face a showdown with a fellow rancher whose wife Starrett happens to be in love with. But this small-town conflict is nothing compared to what's on the horizon when outlaw Jack Bruhn (Ives) and his gang ride into town. On the lam after a brutal robbery, the outlaws terrorize the townspeople and hold them captive, even as Bruhn lies dying from a bullet wound to his chest. When Starrett eventually leads the homesteaders on a trail out of harm's way, the tension explodes to an unforgettable climax. Filled with action and suspense, this is one Day you'll never forget!

 Icy cold Western

| | See all MultiRegion's reviews (30)

'Day of the outlaw' is a mixture of Film- Noir and Western. Both my fav genres, so I'm biased.

A fine 'winter' Western, now in my Top-10 Western list. Convincing interpretation of the well-known hard-boiled Robert Ryan and Burl Iver, who rightly won an Oscar (in 1959) for his interpretation of the neglected rancher in the Western 'The Big Country'. This time Burl is on the wrong side of the law.
The stunning 'busty' Tina Louise, who I have not previously seen in films, acted very well too.

Robert Ryan clearly likes the high cold: he was in the excellent Film-Noir 'On Dangerous Ground' mainly shot in a cold, winterly landscape too, and in 'Day of the Outlaw' the icy cold exudes from the screen and it seems, that Ryan enjoys the cold. André de Toth's widescreen film shows the icy cold in a beautiful winter landscape, including snow storms. Shot in black and white, what boosts the atmosphere between the inhabitants of the town and their relationship with their hostages, and the harsh weather conditions.

The story is very likable and everything seems in place.
Minor: the filmposter suggests a pose of Tina Louise, we don't find in this excellent Western by the way.
