A down-on-her-luck, divorced woman meets and falls for a disenchanted outcast cowboy who earns his living by capturing wild mustangs. When she witnesses this cruel spectacle, she teams up with a jaded rodeo performer in an attempt to free the horses.

Last screen appearance for both Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe, who was married to playwright Arthur Miller during the course of the filming.

montgomery clift, clark gable and eli wallach are cowboys scratching a living in reno marilyn monroe is the divorcee who hooks up with them. the title refers to the movie's characters, but john huston could not have found a trio of more appropriately misfitting actors for his film of arthur miller's screenplay. by 1960 clark gable was a relic from the past, his macho appeal all but gone, and marilyn monroe was at the end of her career. for both stars this was their last film gable died of a heart attack before the film was released, and monroe overdosed on drugs a year later. montgomery clift, meanwhile, was so addled by drink and drugs that he would be dead within five years. watching the movie with hindsight gives it a sad fascination.

 Possibly Monroe's best film.

The Misfits is the story of Roslyn Taber (Monroe) divorcing and falling for cowboy Gay Langland (Clark Gable) however he has competition form Perce played by Montgomery Clift. Support comes from the excellent Thelma Ritter as Roslyns friend Isabelle. This is a great film with subtle comedy and plenty of emotion and heart. This is also Monroe's most mature perfomance and unfortunately her last.
