Written and directed by Ben Stiller and featuring a host of stars including Robert Downey Jr, Jack Black, Nick Nolte and Steve Coogan Tropic Thunder is an action packed comedy not to be missed!

A group of well-known successful actors are cast in the biggest, most expensive war movie ever produced! They include Tugg Speedman (Ben Stiller) - a pampered action superstar, Kirk Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr.), an intense, three-time Oscar-winning actor; Jeff Portnoy (Jack Black), star of the popular gross-out comedy franchise "The Fatties"; multi-platinum hiphop-star-turned-entrepreneur-turned-actor Alpa Chino (Brandon T. Jackson); and first-timer Kevin Sandusky (Jay Baruchel).

After filming begins, the director (Steve Coogan) has a change of heart and throws the actors into real-life combat and they are forced to become the fighting unit they're portraying. Will they make it out of the jungle in one piece?

Despite being a Ben Stiller written and directed comedy, there are only two reasons to watch this - and neither of them are Ben Stiller. The first is Robert Downey Jr.'s fantastic Kirk Lazarus, and the second is Tom Cruise's more broad performance as a sweary bald man with big hands.

The film starts OK, and has enough to raise a few smiles and chuckles - but considering its targets, it does not really make enough of the decent premise.

There are plenty of decent supporting actors, but Downey Jr. gets all the best scenes and lines as the precious white Australian actor who blacks up to play a gruff sergeant.

Stiller plays another variant on the over-confident idiot with no self-awareness, but if you liked him in 'Zoolander', 'Dodgeball' or 'Mystery Men' then you will like him in this.

The film is also a 3/5 effort in terms of action, as well as comedy. However, despite its shortcomings it is a film you will want to watch more than once - and so if you like the stars and the premise then it is worth getting on DVD.

No idea what the other guys saw - this is hilarious

Hi there - before we start, let me qualify my review by saying that I love the following comedies: Anchorman, Dodgeball, Happy Gilmore, Airplane, Caddyshack...you get the idea?

Well, as someone who appreciates good comedy, I loved the hell out of Tropic Thunder. I don't understand what the previous couple of reviewers were expecting going in, but this does everything as described in the synopsis.

It's very broad humour, with copious amounts of f-bombs dropped by all and sundry, the movie in-jokes come thick and fast, and Robert Downey gives one of the most amazing performances (seriously - he has been nominated for awards for this role) you will see in a comedy.

It's awesome. It doesn't quite reach the dizzy heights of Anchorman, but then what film could? I'm giving it five to counter the ridiculous "1-star" reviews.

 A little disapointing!

I was really looking forward to this film, ben stiller and jack black!! While there are some very funny moments, and a lot of parody, it just didn't live up to expectations. Robert downey jr. Was funnier than stiller and black put together, and carries the film for a lot of the time!

I would however reccomend this film to anyone, for one reason only! Tom cruise (i never thought i would be saying this!) is absolutely hilarious! I actually thought my lungs were going to collapse in the "dance" scene. The look on matthew mcconaughey's face will stay with me forever. Funniest scene of 2008, hands down!

A good if not great comedy

As with many films recently, was totally unsure how this would live up to all the recent hype. The general answer in my opinion was 'not too badly'. The concept itself was new, refreshing and I like the fact that Hollywood was able to laugh at itself, not too dissimilar to the recent Churchill movie. For me, it started quite slowly after the excellent trailers (which were especially harsh at the movie business!) however half way through the movie the pace had quickened and it flowed nicely. With some excellent cameos and performances I thought this was pretty good, however not quite up to what I was expecting from all the hype, maybe film insiders find it funnier as it's sending up their business from the special effects guys right up to the top. Unlike many comedies recently I did find myself laughing out loud on a couple of occasions, however not enough to make it a 5 star movie I am afraid to say.

worst film ive seen since legally blonde 2!

Terrible film,i think people under the age of 15 may find it funny although its rated 15, so small problem. I unfortunately watched it all and did not laugh once, just felt i'd lost 2 hours of my life!
