Blackly comic, music-infused biopic about the life - and tragic death - of maverick British songwriter and record producer Joe Meek. Flamboyantly gay in a time when homosexuality remained outlawed, tone deaf, drug addicted, famously paranoid and obsessed with black magic, Meek (Con O'Neill) was responsible for a string of 1960s chart-toppers including 'Have I the Right', 'Just Like Eddie', 'Johnny, Remember Me' and the groundbreaking 'Telstar'. Kevin Spacey co-stars as 'Major' Wilfred Banks, the businessman who bankrolls Meeks's home studio at 304 Holloway Road in North London.

True story ! Actually a large number of scences are pure fabrication. The settings are superb but why is Joe Meek portrayed as a conceited pill popping bullying gun toting madman in what seems like every scence. No person can be so evil so often all the time. The film lacks balance and makes you believe Joe Meek had all the social skills of an ape. Take it all with a pinch of salt.

Being 60 seeing this movie was like meeting old friends from my youth, but in a different light and stripped bare. The man that turned down the Beatles was never known to me, just the music and hype of the time. Jess Conrad and Adam Faith were my heroes, Jess still going strong for the face of 1961. His cameo is clever as well as his 'look alike'. I wish I could return to those days for just 24 hours having seen this film. I still have a Telstar CD & Jess Conrads! I was one of the girls that screamed at the Stones & Beatles later, forgetting this disturbed genius of pop. Do watch this.

Do not miss this British masterpiece

Director Nick Moran has made a little masterpiece of a film. Apparently they have been trying to complete this film for several years, and it was well worth the wait. Its a fascinating story, well acted, superbly directed, and gives a great insight into a time of music history.

 Fantastic film

This film is a masterpiece - the acting is superb. It was so interesting to learn of all the records and artists that Joe Meek was involved with, and Con O'Neill is just wonderful. Aided by a great script, it tells the tragic tale of Joe's life with plenty of comic moments along the way. Particularly liked Tom Burke as the songwriter, Geoff Godard, brilliant performance. The little biopics at the end that told what happened to the characters throughout their lives was so good, especially with the Duffy song "Please stay" to accompany it. Not a dry eye in the house!

 Loved it!

This is one of my favourite films, it truly deserves a watch!

Con O'Neill is amazing, the 60s London setting is amazing, watching a film about one of the pioneers of home recording is amazing, go and watch this movie!
