Up-and-coming young lawyer Andrew Beckett (Tom Hanks) has just been fired by his prestigious law firm. They say he hasn't got what it takes. Andrew knows it's because he's got AIDS.

Determined to defend his professional reputation, Andrew hires fierce, brilliant personal-injury attorney Joe Miller (Denzel Washington) to sue his former employers for wrongful dismissal. Joe is initially reluctant to take on the case. Although he as grown up knowing the pain of prejudice, he's never had to confront his own prejudices against homosexuality and AIDS...until now.

One man is fighting for his reputation, his life and for justice. The other is battling to overcome his own and society's ignorance and fear. Philadelphia is one of the most powerful and critically acclaimed movies of our time.

 A powerful, excellent film

This is a beautifully created film, covering a topic that few dared talk about. Tom Hanks is superb, fully deserving his Academy Award, as a gay may dying of aids. His transformation from a heathy individual to one that is pale, bald, and just withering away is haunting to watch. He is well supported by Denzel Washington as the lawyer that represents Hank's character, bringing across the battle against his own predjudices and homophobia excellently.

Its a powerful film, and one that really cuts to the heart of homophobia and the fear that aids caused amongst those that didn't understand what it was. A much welcome change that tackles the issues head on.

Good film, Good Story, Very Good acting from Hanks and Washington (in a role he did not get enough credit for, and Supporting Oscar nom would have been about right). But as good as Hanks's performance is, it was nowhere near as good as Oscar fellow nominees Liam Neeson in Shindlers List and Daniel Day Lewis for In The Name of the Father.

This is by far Tom Hanks worst film, I'm a big fan of Tom Hanks but not in this one, best thing to do with this if bought as a present is throw it straight in the bin!
