I was very excited for this film (not having played on any of the games) as it appealed to me as a decent and fresh horror. I wasn't disappointed. The story is relatively simple, however unfortunately you would have to watch it again to catch everything and understand everything, but isn't that what makes films worthwhile?

Initially I was attracted to the film because of the mesmerising Radha Mitchell. I hate to admit it but she can act (eat my words) and she pulls it off well here. I enjoyed her presence from the horror point of view as oppose to the mother daughter desperation thing. She already achieved that well enough in Man on Fire. Her on screen presence kept me griped from start to finish, and the adrenaline I felt when she encountered various foes is unmatched, she is truly a spectacle, well done.

The supporting cast are okay, I liked Laurie Holden, she's an excellent tough chick (if not eye candy) Deborah Kara Unger was also impressive. Alice Krige was brilliant, darkly brilliant.

Unfortunately the dialogue at points was lack-lustre, however not as bad as some people put it so ignore this malarkey about it having worse dialogue than Scary Movie, fortunately that is an impossible task. The special effects are superb, Silent Hill and it's creatures are beautifully detailed, captivating, disturbing and immersing. Surprisingly most of the creatures are real actors.
I also keep hearing "only fans of the game will like it or understand it" well here's something to smash that annoying broken record, I loved the film and I don't like the games and have no intention of going back to Silent Hill 2 or whatever this was loosely based on, and, for that matter, I understood the film, if you don't-watch it again!

Of course this film is not perfect, but, it is a game adaptation at the core, and will be certainly hard to beat.

Oh and if anyone else says Scary Movie, Saw or Scream is better than this film (a majority of people who love teen slasher flicks will probably) I will projectile vomit.

This is an excellent, clever and a film that immerses you in its dark world, anyone should check out. Be your own judge!

Best Video Game To Movie Adaptation

Being the best video game film ever made sounds better than it actually is as there have been some diabolical films made from video games Doom and Resident Evil to not name and shame Super Mario Brothers. Silent Hill however can truly stand on it's own as a exceptional horror film.

The acting is surprisingly good for the genre and the plot is simple enough for fans not of the game to understand . . . the creature effects are fantastic and rival any blockbuster, the atmosphere created from the town itself is chilling and at times peek through the fingers. Relative to the game itself, the film holds it's own and gives you as a viewer the urge to play the game but not experience the 'when will i wet myself' atmosphere.

A genuinely great and under-rated movie, arguably the best horror films of recent times.

This film blew my mind on how well they translated on of the best survivial horror games to the big screen. The film itself works so well it does feel very much like the games, and the plot evolves much like the games too.

not only that, there is a very strong feel of japanese horror about this film which adds a very disturbing feel to it.

A must watch for any horror fan!

A fantastic and original film in it's own right! Love it!

This is a movie you either love or hate, and I love it!

I've noticed people who love a game often hate the movie adaptations because they don't exactly match the game experience, but this is silly, if the movie exactly matched a video game than it simply wouldn't work, it wouldn't make any sense to anyone who didn't know the game, and would those who know it really well really pay to see nothing but a play through of it using real actors!? What would be the point, and in this instance, it probably wouldn't get a certificate!

I would say this movie is certainly one of the most thoughtful interpretations of a video game that I've yet seen, and is for the most part very faithful to the feel of the original games indeed, with only alterations of names of places and characters but with pretty much all of the original themes and overall spirit kept intact, and the treatment of the Silent Hill creatures is fantastic, especially when you know that they are in fact costumes and NOT, as most folks think, pure CGI, although some were 'enhanced' with digital effects such as the burning children who turn to ash (bit tricky to do for real).

The other reason why many people don't like this movie is because it requires thought!

You do have to listen and think to 'get' this movie, it has quite a complex plot that may require at least two watches before you get it all in your head and work it all out.

I don't think you need to know the games to understand what's going on, but it would definitely help, otherwise some speculation is required, hence the repeated viewing which makes it good value for home ownership.

The extras are great too, and I've lost count of how many times I've watched it now, but I'll be watching it again!

So, if you're looking for a brain dead gory horror movie that follows a simple well known formula or are a purist of the original games, you will hate this, however, if you're looking for a weird and freeky psychological movie with bizarre monsters that gets the blood pumping and brain pulsing a bit, buy this!
