Another year, another Resident Evil movie. The previous attempts were hit or miss (mostly the latter) but it now seems that the engine has finally run out of steam and what's left of a franchise that showed a meagre of promise has now fallen entirely to the dogs. The plot of this iteration is nonsensical, the characters thin and transparent, the action dated and monotonous - but it is 3D! Resident Evil: Afterlife is surely a groundbreaking, 3D achievement for all movie producers who dream of replicating through the medium of film the experience of obtaining a minor head injury by being the target of a flying brick. Bravo! You have succeeded.
OK if you are watching Resident Evil Afterlife either you are a fan of the films and games or you have made a major faux pas in thinking this is of the same calibre as say Saving Private Ryan. Resi films are not well acted, not well scripted, what they are is really entertaining.
I am an intelligent person who enjoys a good book and constructive well written films. However I also enjoy a film that doesnt pretend to be anything except an all out leave your brain at the door action fest!
I have enjoyed every Resi Movie despite the deviation from the original games. That said they maintain enough links for both the gamer and the non gamer to enjoy. Think Night of the Living Dead mixed with the Matrix! This film is unfortunately the weakest of the 4 so far. Thats not to say it isnt good and in many ways its a necessary step to take as this one seems to change pace. The first two had a sense of urgency, the third a hunt for salvation and the fourth is more trying to make sense of the aftermath. Its a slower film with less action but its still thoroughly enjoyable. If you have liked the previous ones you need to see it. A change of pace is required in order to differentiate one film from another.
Its almost like this film is a stepping stone to the final chapter as you dont quite get to bond with any characters outside the main 3 or 4
SPOILER PARAGRAPH. This film does set up a fifth film without a doubt. This needs to be the last one and it needs to go out on a major high. PWS Anderson - the ball is in your court
being a massive fan of the games, the films never seemed to hit the money for me (as with most video game adapaitons) but this seems to go more to the root of the franchise bringing the chris/claire storyline alone gets you closer to the games, but then ya throw in wesker and some crazy dogs and you get the sense that the films are going in the right direction. i just hope that if theres any more films to follow then they bring some more of this to the table xD. 5/5
Careful you don't fall through the plot holes in this monstrosity.
A seemingly random array of pointless scenes otherwise made purely for 3D & even then they're not that spectacular.
Barely a zombie in it, the ghouls aren't explained as to why they are suddenly 10ft tall with a hammer etc. Fans of the games will recognize scenes but will be left extremely disapointed
If you a massive fan of these movies like me then you wont be disappointed! This is a fantastic sequel and a great 4th movie in the series. The story is really good and carries on very well from the last three, the cast is great a few characters from past movie come back and Milla Jovovich of course is back as the wonderful Alice!! The effects are awesome this looks like the best budget yet for a resident evil movie!! There is allot of cool visual stuff going on and slow motion scenes and cool villains and the dogs are back!! Overall its a fun visual cool over the top shoot-em up horror action blast that is 100% pure entertainment for the money!!
