This movie is actually quite a gem of horror vampire remake, I was not expecting much of this movie but was pleasantly surprised to find it is brilliant, the story is quite different from the original in certain ways but still keeps most similarities, its a fun story thats well paced and has plenty of good action and very good performances from Colin Farell and David Tennant, its not mega gory or anything but does have its dose of blood and cool vampire effects, worth checking out for sure, great movie!!
The must see film of 2011 this was a awesome remake. Great cast and great Vegas setting made this film stick out bit also Farrell role as the vampire was awesome with the added Maclovin playing evil ed too a different level and then add David Tennant as the great Peter Vincent very funny. The film did not get the credit it deserves....... Must Buy film 5 stars *****
I remember my son bringing home the original Fright Night when it was released on Video all those years back. Since then I have always concidered Fright Night as the best vampire film ever made. Like the review below I too was un-easy about re-making this 80's classic, but I thought I would give it a go and make my own mind up, as I too have no problems with remakes or Reboots as long as they don't ruin the good name of the original.
Thankfully Fright Night 2011 never hardly puts a foot wrong that balance of horror and comedy is pitch perfect, the new cast are great, although I still think Chris Sarandon in the original Fright Night intimidated and charmed better than the updated Colin Farrell version, but Farrell is having a blast. David Tennant is brilliant as Peter Vincent as he does a side splitting impression of Russell Brand. the suspence is white knuckle stuff, check out the scene where Charlie desperatly tries to rescue one of Jerry's victims. Although the Night Club and seduction scenes are not a patch on the original and it lacks the fantastic wolf sequence that made the original such a classic and has an over relience of CGI, the tweaks to the original story almost compensate.
The strange thing is this more graphic violent update carries the 15 certificate, but the 1985 now tamer original still has the 18 certificate. How times have changed.
All in all this remake is very welcome and mops the floor with most other updates, Fright Night 2011 is one of the most enjoyable horror films in years. Even my wife enjoyed it and we are both in our 60's!
i never seen the original fright night and i have ordered it as people say it is better than this and with this i thought it was amazing . "mcloving" was miscast in this movie the only fault with the movie . Colin Farrell was perfectly cast as gerry the vampire , David tennant was one that made the movie funny and played his character also great . It was good to see a vampire movie out that has no sparkly vampire , no winy teenage girl quite frankly im sick of hearing about twilight and this movie outshines twilight in every shape and form a must see for fans of vampire movies
The original 1985 Fright Night has always been my favourite Vampire film. I even rate it higher than The Lost Boys. But before you all scream "No one needs another remake , No one needs another vampire film and most of all No one needs to see David Tennant scratching his nuts dressed in spray on leather trousers, but that doesn't make it bad.
Far from it, this remake on the whole is excellent. Director Craig Gillespie update of Tom Holland's 1985 horror comedy is tight, slick and very smart if a bit unnecessary, but very well done, thrilling and amusing nonetheless.
Anton (Chekov) Yelchin stars as ex-geek every-teen Charley Brewster, who happens to live next door to a vampire (Colin Farrell). Thing is, no one believes him. Not his out of your league girlfriend (Imogen Poots), not his busy body mum (Toni Collette), and certainly not the school jocks at school he's trying to impress to escape the nerd-dom of his childhood best-bud Ed (Christopher Mintz-Plasse..... McLovin in Superbad).
Enter the trousers. Replacing Roddy McDowell's cowardly horror host from the original is Tennant, as Criss Angel-esque show fake magician Peter Vincent, a mincing Russell Brand-alike vampire expert who's Brewster's last hope.
It's a strong and very likeable cast, and while Farrell can't quite muster the menace to truly intimidate as much as Chris Sarandon did in the original. The pin sharp, funny dialogue and well-spaced set-pieces keep boredom far at bay.
This is a consciously contemporary update and smarter for it, as such, Fright Night newbies may adopt this as their own in the same way 80s teens did the original, For an unnecessary remake, it's brilliantly enjoyable stuff.
But it's worth remembering Fright Night 85 although superior was never as hedonistically seductive as The Lost Boys. Equally, this crowd pleaser may not woo like the bloodless Twilight or enchant as much as Let The Right One In / Let Me In.
But Fright Night is a full blooded Vampire film and when the blood flows it gushes. This is a very respectful, slick horror that's faithful to the fun and flair of the original. The 3D works well in the cinema but is un-needed, the cast appeals, the action's fast and fun.
Fright Night 2011 is a great remake with plenty of bite.
