Let The Right One In

I seem to have had this movie for ages in my collection but never got around to watching it until now.
It was news of the U.S. remake Let Me In that finaly made me see sense. I knew the movie was supposed to be good, but was not expecting it to be this good.
Don't be put off by the subtitles as the spoken Norwegian language only adds to the overall effect of this movie. It's a vampire movie like no other as it's done from a 12 years olds perspective and deals with everything that goes with that awkward age. Don't expect it to be a nerve shredding horror, but the film slowly draws you in and gets under the skin. The children's performances are amazing, dealing with subject matters well above their years. The snow bound setting is beautiful and the contrast of the blood in the snow is unsettleingly brilliant. This movie does live up to the hype, and am looking forward to the U.S remake ( Let Me In ) but to be honest this original Norwegian version will be a hard act to follow as it balances the child like wonder and the shocking blood shed perfectly.

This film is raw, languid and so strangely hypnotic but grips you and plays with your emotions. So hard to to describe but the childrens performance so deft and powerful it reminded me of natalie portmans -matilda in leon. It is definatgely one that will provoke mixed reactions, but to criticise it for slow pace and the fact its swedish is insanity! Unless your sight is poor...watch it with subtitles!! Proof that european cinema is more powerful and intoxicating as a medium to the public than any cliche ridden hollywood blockbuster. Definately a cinema cinema classic for me, and one I will watch again and again.

I don't usually write reviews but all the 5 starrers compelled me to do this.

Empire ( to which I subscribe ) called it the 'Best Horror Movie of the Year'. Well, that may be the case at the time of the review but if it's a horror movie you're after don't buy or watch this film. It's not horrific, scary or shocking and I certainly hope it isn't the best horror movie of the year as it'll be a dry old year for horror fans.

The Daily Mirror said 'Brutal and Brilliant. You've never seen anything like this'. Well, it's neither brutal nor, in my opinion, brilliant. As for not having seen anything like it before, I can only assume they are referring to their readers.

Basically this film is just okay, if you like World cinema ( which me and my wife do ). It's an interesting twist on the vampire genre, beautifully filmed, atmospheric, and the two young leads are truly excellent. That's it. As for being brutal, brilliant and horror, it's none of those things. That's pure hype and we were both bitterly disappointed at not having the pants scared off us. Which is what the gushing reviews ( aka hype ) promised.

On a personal level, I certainly won't be visiting Sweden because it would appear that a serial killer on the loose, murdering people in their parks and then stringing them up, slitting their throats and draining all their blood is a common occurrence in Sweden as such killings, ( to feed the wee vamp ), didn't generate one iota of interest from the Swedish media or Police.

Now that is scary !!

If you want mindless violence and no plot or story then buy Hostel or some other pointless Hollywood blood and guts offering. If you have a modicum of intelligence and enjoy a beautifully shot and acted film with a dark, interesting yet touching storyline that actually makes you think about what you are watching then you will not be disappointed with Let The Right One In.
