Dreamgirls has perhaps been overshadowed by the success story of former American Idol contestant Jennifer Hudson, and therefore has not necessarily received the acclaim that it should of done as a film on the whole.
I must say that before viewing the film I was fairly synical - purely due to the cast. Eddie Murphy, most famously known for his work in comedies; Jamie Foxx, a famous R&B/Hip-Hop star; Jennifer Hudson, a vaguely unsuccessful (before Dreamgirls) American Idol contestant; and Beyonce Knowles, best known for her R&B solo career as well as being a member of Destinys Child. None of these stars seemed to fit into this genre of music nor genre of film, however, when viewing the film I was pleasantly surprised.
The emotion, the tension, the dreams, the betrayal, the friendship and the outstanding vocals, all add up to a wonderful film/musical. The on-screen chemistry between the cast really enables them to portray the narrative of the film to its fullest potential.
The songs throughout the song are sung beautifully by all the cast, and I was definately surprised by the standard of Eddie Murphy's vocals. In fact I was unable to get the songs from the film out of my head and shortly after viewing the film I purchased the soundtrack. To this day they remain firm favourites of mine on my iPod.
Synical or not, this film is definately a must-see.

This is too close to the Supremes story not to be about them, but there are parts of the movie which which seem opposite to what happened to that sixties girl group. If the story was about the Supremes then make it about them. That way you could include the hit singles which are far more memorable than the songs in the movie. That said it is good entertainment, and if you know nothing of Diana Ross, Mary Wilson, Cindy Birdsong and Florence Ballard, or Motown, then accept the film for what it is. Strong performances and a mainly believeable story line make it worth a viewing. The true story might seem a little far fetched - worth doing a bit of research.
Eddie murphy shows the only talent in this mosh of tosh! People won awards for this? The worlds gone mad! Buy a danger mouse dvd instead,u will enjoy it more! I gaurantee!
