The music and colour of the famous Moulin Rouge in Paris is brought to life in this film in a way that cannot be described. It combines passion, romance, drama, heartache and music.
Nicole Kidman is really good, but in m y opinion Ewan McGregor steals the show. He is the sensitive young poet, naive and full of dreams, who moves to paris to be part of the bohemian movement at the turn of the century. He meets a group of actors who convince him to write a play and to get the famous courtesan Satine to star in it. Christin falls in love with Satine, the Diamond of the Moulin Rouge, who dreams of becoming a real actress. Satine finds herself drawn to this penniless young man, despite her love usually being reserved for the highest bidder. When she mistakes him for the Duke she is supposed to seduce, Satine fall for Christian and they begin an affair, masked by the play they are due to open. They grow more and more in love, hiding their affair from the Duke, who has fallen for Satine and wants her to himself. Jealousy and mistrust begins to tear them apart, their dreams crashing down.
The music in this film, coupled with the colour, the dancing and the plot make it unmissable. The soundtrack rocks and Ewan McGregors version of "Your Song" is amazing. This really is a story about Freedom, Beauty, Truth and Love.
Just absolutely love this movie, every bit of it from start to finish, every character, every song... EVERYTHING! Brilliant, genius, every single actor in this movie delivers and what a great if not heartbreaking story. It took me 2 watches to really get it as the first time was such a surprise as it is a fantasy adventure and love story like no other, but once you get it you too will be singing along to every note. Simply one of the best films ever made. Can't wait for the Blu Ray version..... Anyone?
This film is spectacular.....
I recommend it for everyone, i have watched it many times since ive bought it and i never get bored of it. The music the actors the story line is fabulous. BUY IT, YOU WILL BE SO HAPPY !
When i first saw this i was a nervous about what to think! But in the end thought that it was a really good film! Brilliant music & acting by Nicole Kidman! This is the type of film that requires you to sit down and have plenty of time to watch & understand the story!
One of the best films ever! I loved it! A must see!
Where to start??
An exotic, sensual, emotional, often very funny work of genius.
The music is fantastic, modern songs like Eltons your song, and Roxanne by the police are taken and the meaning brought to life in the brilliant vocal and dance sequences. Nicole Kidman portrays the elusive, yet vulnerable cortesan to perfection and Ewan McGregor is gorgeous as the penniless writer seduced by the Moulin Rouges beautiful star.
The stars have beautiful voices and manage a chemistry that was lacking in Cruise/kidman productions.
A superb duo ! A very nice movie! So, a very nice moment !
I could easily run out of superlatives when reviewing this movie. Ok let's start with Baz Luhrmann. The man is a genius. The concept behind this film is mind blowing and when you watch the superb extras disc, everything is just so right in the film. Yes -there were diamond dogs at the Moulin Rouge as there was an elephant outside.
This will become a cult movie and certainly one of the best musicals ever to come out of Hollywood just because it is so original.
Ewan Macgregor is a very handsome man and can sing too - his rendering of "Your Song' is wonderful as is the whole duet scene with him and the just brilliant Nicole Kidman. What voices -it is just great to see these two superstars of the film world doing something so different and doing it so well. I was privileged to see Ewan in London in Guys and Dolls and - yes - he can really sing live too!!
Then we come to Jim Broadbent - this larger than life character could so easily have become characature but this is a funny, over the top performance but with enough left to show he can sing too and bring the subtlety in for the poignant scenes when needed.
This is not just a movie -this is one of great cinema experiences of the last twenty years- shame on you oscar committee!!! OK -it was nominated but Baz Luhrmann should have got it for that incredible direction alone.
The extras disc is huge with so much on it -every detail of the film is covered and by the end of it you feel as if you have been involved in the making of it yourself.
Buy it - watch the lot- cry your eyes out and then do the whole thing again -it's very infectious - just fabulous!!!
How many superlatives did I use??
