Acclaimed as one of the greatest football films ever made, Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait is a unique real-time study of one of the beautiful game's greatest icons: Zinedine Zidane.

During an entire Real Madrid vs. Villareal match before 80,000 fans at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, 17 movie cameras under the direction of acclaimed cinematographer Darius Khondji (Se7en) were set around the playing field focusing solely on Zidane. With a soundtrack featuring the legend's thoughts and observations and a majestic score by Scottish rock band Mogwai, this extraordinary feature - conceived and co-directed by Turner Prize-winning artist Douglas Gordon and French artist Philippe Parreno - catches in stunning detail all the drama and excitement of a footballing genius in action.

Interesting - but could have been so much better.

I think that this piece is moving art, capturing Zidane on a normal night in Madrid. I think that it is strangely compelling as it could have been so much better. I understand that the logistics would probably mean they couldn't have followed him for a number of games - but that would make it so much better. His thoughts during the game are profound and Zidane as an artistic subject is perfect as he has alot of natural charisma. I don't think the average fan would enjoy this, I feel that as well as a passion for football you have to appreciate art and cinematic photography. A small note - notice how he strangely has the habit of dragging his foot whilst he is walking around.

If you are a true football fan, and can appreciate the greatness of the legend that is Zidane, then this is a great buy. You watch a masterpiece about the greatest footballer of all time. You can even use this as a lesson on how to play football.

Life is too short to watch this film

A great idea but terrible to watch. This film is not what I thought it would be. I love football and appreciate the game and all its beauty. You will see Zidane running and walking around the pitch doing mostly nothing but looking around. I kept at it in the hope that when he did have the ball you would be able to capture his play and body movement etc. Instead you are left frustrated that his play isnt captured as well as could and should be. I can see how a minority of people who appreciate art will like this. However for the average joe or even if you are like me and like things a little abstract, this documentary is just a little too much to take. the soundtrack and words included are also dilute and poor. believe me i really wanted to like this film but couldnt. A red card to philippe parreno :-/

 Fantastic film

Ignore the two who said this was boring and life i too short, if you love football and can appreciate how good zidane was then this is for you, excellently filmed, this is the portrait of a genius
