4 The Fen Street Gang in all their glorysupremecommander | 16/09/2011 | See all supremecommander's reviews (82)A true classic British sitcom that ran weekly between 1968 and 1972 which also lead to a successful one off film centred around a hapless but caring teacher played by the brilliant John Alderton and his class of unruly kids teenage kids. Of course in hindsight they all appear to be in their early 20s but never mind. John Alderton as Bernard Hedges is perhaps best remembered for this role as is the wonderful Deryck Guyler who plays Norman Potter as school caretaker and the butt of endless situational gags. Supporting cast includes Richard Davies Joan Sanderson and Noel Howlett amongst many other well known faces from the era. Of course the programme is dated as are some of the jokes but it endures due at least in part by its charm and warmth. The final series saw some changes and the loss of Bernard and 5c after which the series ended. It would be wonderful for a re release to include a decent set of extras but I fear this is rather unlikely given that for even the Carry On series only a handful of films have been given half decent treatment. If your a fan I would fully recommend that you buy the complete set which also includes the feature film. Talking of which its Norman Potter that saves the day but Bernard somehow gets the credit. A caretakers lot is never done.
