The story of Jake La Motta's rise & fall is not an easy story to watch.
But the film is so well Filmed, Directed and Acted, you cant take your eyes off it.
Its not the sort of movie you watch every few months, but even one viewing will leave its Greatness ingrained on you.
It is a powerful movie, about Jealousy, Obsession, Love, Inner Demons and Boxing
Martin Scorsese should have definitely won his first Best Director Oscar for this, but didnt.
I believe, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver and Goodfellas are his Ultimate Masterpieces.
The film is shot in beautiful Black and White and 30 Years later it still feels fresh as ever.
The Boxing scenes are Expertly executed. Short and Brutal with sickening sound effects.
And now we come onto the Acting. This is of course also the movie that won Robert De Niro his only Best Actor Oscar.
And he is AMAZING in it. His body language, his emotional outbursts, and his quiet moments of reflection.
Easily ONE of his Top 5 performances.
The dedication De Niro put in as part of his Method Process pays off Spectacularly for him and the viewer.
He trained with the real Jake La Motta and other professionals and reached at a level where he could have fought professionally.
Production was also shut down, so he could gain 60lb to portray the older Jake La Motta.
But the Method to the Madness is only a small part of a Great Movie
Joe Pesci also gives one of his best perfomances as the brother of Jake La Motta
A Must Watch for any serious film fan.
In the past we have had the likes of "Rocky" and "Ali" but to be fair they have nothing on this movie. Robert De Niro is Jake La Motta a champion boxer inside the ring but outside it he is troubled by unrivalled rage and suspicion which alienates him from his brother Joey (Joe Pesci) and his wife. This movie isnt just about the boxing its more about the character study of the rise and fall of a once great performer. Great directing from Martin Scorsese and even better performance by De Niro. Enjoy
Absolutely brilliant movie, another triumphant collaboration between Scorsesse-De niro, by far the best boxing movie ever, recently watched 'The Figther' Christian Bale-Mark Wallberg another really good film but still not a patch on 'Raging Bull'. Do not under any circumstances get boxing mixed up with 'Rocky' or any of the sequels, 'Sylly Stalone' is niether a fighter or an actor, you could believe 'De niro' trained really hard for this movie, then put on 60lbs to play 'La Motta' as an older man. 'Jo Pesci' was brilliant aswell as 'La Mottas' brother, and all in grainy black and white, superb!
A man's self-destruction, a boxer who couldn't control his life outside of the ring. His anger and aggression lived with him outside the ring, he had personal demons which he never quite managed to escape. Here is the tale of Jake La Motta. The story flows well, Scorsese is a master storyteller and it shows here, it develops nicely from his younger years to post-retirement. You get to understand the man, can't say you'll grow to love him though! De Niro's acting is spot on, he comes across as believable and helps you to know the character greater. Plus it's amazing to see how much weight he gained especially for the role! Overall, it's a classic movie, it entertains and entertains. A movie for everyones TOP 50 list.
*Raging Bull is the suitably titled boxing film. The film is based on the rise and fall of the boxer LaMotta. LaMotta played by De Niro is managed by his Brother played by Joe Pesci. The film is shot in Black in White and set in the forties.
*Raging Bull is a great film. It has a great feel and almost feels like it was really shot in the forties. From films like this its easy to see why Scorsese is considered such a great director. Its a brilliant piece of film making. The partnership of De Niro and Pesci is one of the best. In Raging Bull we see an accurate and true to life portrayal of the 'Self Destructive' sportsman.
