 Pleasantly Suprised

When I heard about this mini-series I thought "Oh here we go, riding on the film's success". Then when I realised it was a modern re-telling. I was totally put off.

Sherlock Holmes should NOT work in a modernised setting. But to my astonishment, 'Sherlock' does. It's near flawless from beginning to end. Great plots, compelling characters, and it pays great homage to the original stories and past re-tellings.

The casting is probably some of the best I've seen on television for quite some time. Martin Freeman is hands down superb as Watson. His delivery of lines, his expression through his actions, everything is top notch. And Benedict Cumberbatch is a far far better Sherlock Holmes than Robert Downey Jr. There's a far more intimidating presense about him - more of a 'hooked' factor. In my view an actor we should be seeing alot more of in the future.

4 Stars. Bravo

I am writing this after broadcast of episode 2. I am 100% hooked.
This new take on the Shelock Holmes tradition is both familiar and new with lovely little touches that actually reassures the viewer that this is a character they have know in some way all their lives.
This series could easily have been tacky and cheap - however, it shines with a well thought out and executed idea and you can see the dedication that the co creators, Mark gatiss and Stephen Moffat, the producer, Sue Virtue and the directors have poured into it.
The two leads are just superb with the amazing talents of Benedict Cumberbatch playing the hero with depth and care - just amazing. This man could play Holmes in any era. Martin Freeman plays the modern Watson as you would like him to be - no flippancy or comedy here, just a guy whos been through the wars - literally.
Top notch performances.
There is also a marvelous and well delivered 'series theme' ... that of the ultimate villain and already the tension is built up for the appearance of Moriarty, and I cannot wait..!
Well written, paced, acted, filmed, and presented - this is a 21st Century police show with style and much better than any of its current police/detective counterparts. A true must have in your TV DVD/Blu ray collection. Stunning.

A brilliant masterpiece that completely modernises the whole Sherlock Holmes View. Superbly put together and well thought out. The episodes are just perfect. Each 90 minutes long and 90 minutes of excellence. The acting was just spot on, Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman have made this series what it should be both as brilliant as each other.

I cannot commend this enough, my girlfriend and I loved every minute of it, The first episode we thought was the best completely drawing you in and wanting you to find out more.

The whole thing makes you think you are on some sort of adventure with them where it feels as if you are being engaged in the DVD some how.

I cannot wait for the next series due for release autumn next year.

Recommend this to all 5/5!!

Top 100 Books Reviewer

A 19th century detective mixed with 21st century crimes, sounded a little weak when I first heard of it by with some excellent casting of the 2 main characters and some excellent plots by the man now behind Doctor Who this show has mixed together an old fashioned crime detective tale with new age technology and crime perfectly, the best casting has to be Martin Freeman as Dr Watson, fresh back from Afghanistan, who finds himself with nothing to take his mind from what happened out there, he runs into an old colleague who introduces him to Sherlock, played with dramatic flair and panache by Benedict Cumberbatch, they dont exactly hit it off at first but the mutual love of the chase sets them off to a fresh murder scene and the rest is history, excellent writing from Moffat, Gatiss and Thompson, a must for another series hopefully with more episodes next time as this series only has 3, very fresh and entertaining series with lots of scope for more.
