This made for TV movie shocked Britain way back in 1984 when it was first shown on TV, at the time it was the height of the cold war, as the West and the Soviet Block had it's nuclear missles pointing at each other. This deals with a a nuclear detonation over Sheffield. At the time of release I was at high school, and such was the impact of the film, we were made to watch it in class, The film resonated with us teenagers at the time, as we lived around the area the film was based. Now all these years later the film seems tamer, but still has a cold impact that sends a shiver down the spine, and the question "what if?" still comes to mind. It's the years after the attack that the film has most impact, as we still try to hold the threads of humanity together. This is still a film of great impact and far better than the soap opera American version The Day After.
Also it's a reminder of how simple things were back in 1984, as then at least we knew who our enemy was.
Well worth re-watching!

There are very few films/documentaries that I would say are guaranteed to have a profound impact on anyone; but if there is one, its "Threads". The film is essentially a timeline, documenting the events leading up to, during and after a devastating nuclear war. The documentary style that is apparent throughout the film just seems to function in making the whole thing so real. And that is the truly horrifying nature of this film; the fact that the events within could of, and could still happen.
We watch in awe as society is brought to its knees, and really empathise with the characters as they face this crushing ordeal. There are scenes which are downright graphic but by no means do I get the impression that these were put in for shock value. They seem to be included just to add to the realism. I will say this, it definitely isnt for those of a nervous disposition. After seeing this film, you will really wonder how you would cope in that situation, and that itself can be a pretty haunting experience.

I heartily recommend this film. It has been wonderfully produced and really stands out as a fantastic piece of film in its own right. It tells its story with guts and determination that are missing within the industry. If there was ever a film that was fundamentally "anti-nuke", its this.

Last summery. There is not another film out there quite like this. Threads will take you to a very, VERY dark place. There are really no words to describe it, and even now i feel as though this rather poorly written review doesnt do it justice.

We were made to watch this when i was at school!!! At the age of 14, this film was purely terrifying! I had nightmares for weeks !! The images it produced stayed with me always.
Now im 30 something and the images it left with me are still as strong - the fact that it is a story which could very well become reality makes it even more powerful and thought provoking.
Although this is an old film the who whole thing is portrayed as being exceptionally believable.
Prepare to be shocked, disturbed and mortified....

Easily the most scary film/documentary I have ever watched. It's chilling and well dramatized, I can see why it was banned in America it really blew the myth away of duck and cover.
