Executive produced by Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg and Gary Goetzman, The Pacific is an epic ten-part miniseries from HBO and the team that made Band of Brothers.

The Pacific tracks the intertwined real-life stories of three U.S Marines, Robert Leckie, John Basilone and Eugene Sledge across the vast canvas of the Pacific Theater during World War 2. The miniseries follows these men and their fellow Marines from their first battle with the Japanese on Guadalcanal, through the rain forests of Cape Gloucester and the strongholds of Peleliu, across the bloody sands of Iwo Jima and through the horror of Okinawa, and finally to their triumphant but uneasy return home after V-J Day.

The Pacific is primarily based on two memoirs of US Marines, Eugene Sledge's With The Old Breed: At Peleliu And Okinawa and Robert Leckie's Helmet For My Pillow. The series also draws on Eugene Sledge's China Marine and Chuck Tatum's Red Blood, Black Sand, as well as original interviews conducted by the filmmakers.

  • Profiles of The Pacific - Intimate portraits of the real Marines featured in The Pacific
  • Making The Pacific - 30-minute feature providing an inside look at the making of this epic miniseries
  • Anatomy of The Pacific War - Historical documentary on the events that influenced the merciless brutality in the Pacific theater

 Hardcore World War 2

Well as an avid fan of WW2 especially (Band of Brothers) I was mighty impressed with this latest Speilberg & Hanks production. Honestly I prefered Band of Brothers, especially the modern day interviews with the members of the 506th after each part and I will always shed a tear after watching it, The Pacific was a bit more hit and miss with the story lines, but it was raw, gruesome and I think more hard hitting than BofB. It portrayed the true horror of war, the impact on soldiers and civilians alike. Not for the faint hearted but I applaud Hanks & Speilberg for yet again another excellent portrail of WW2. BofB, Saving Private Ryan, The Pacific..... What next I cant wait!!..

Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks return to WWII following the seminal Band of Brothers and bring us The Pacific. Based around three marines, Eugine "Sledgehammer" Sledge, Robert "Lucky" Leckie and John "Manila John" Basilone the Pacific begins at Guadalcanal and winds up back in the U.S at the war's conclusion.

The series is an absolute triumph, taking us through the horrors of combat, the effects of extended periods of duty on the psychology of soldiers, the drudgery of being off the lines and ultimately the difficulty that the Marines had adjusting back to civilian life after the war.

This isn't Band of Brothers and comparrisons shouldn't be made to it either. The combat sequences are fantastic, the stories are hard hitting and the Marine is depicted as a very different soldier to the paratrooper of Easy Company. The Pacific is every bit as good as Band of Brothers because it is so different and dares to go where Band of Brothers didn't, deeper into the psyche of the soldiers depicted in it.

If you want non stop combat, then Band of Brothers will not disappoint, but for a deeper and unflinching look at combat The Pacific ticks every box. WATCH IT!

 Troubled

Read reviews before watching and I must say I am a little troubled by what I read. Who has seen real fighting - hand-to-hand killing, being seen clearly as a target but not knowing your enemy, going home to nightmares, sweats, re-living horrors you have done and seen. I worry that people who just watch films and play games can give there 'informed' reviews. What is more worrying is that there words are not too far from the truth. If it is all so important and so much fun why not join up?

 Great

The difference between this and Band Of Brothers is that in BOB, You are following a whole platoon and its action, action, action all the way. Butt with this, its more about peoples stories and how they got to where they are [And obviously this is the vietnam war] Still pretty good just not as great

 Peaches, Sledge and SNAFU...

Before you sit down to watch this, please don't try and compare it to 'Band of Brothers' (despite BoB probably being the main reason why you bought this!). The Pacific is a belter, and any hardcore 'fan' of War Series will simply love yet another masterpiece from Hanks and Spielberg. It may take a little while to get to know the characters, but once you do you'll find they do actually have plenty of depth (the blossoming of Sledge's character from a young man into a soldier is an interesting sub-plot in itself). The action scenes are incredible and can be a little gruesome, but those are the harsh realities of war. You can only wonder where/what the next production is going to be.
