After a hold-up and a murder, outlaw Ben Wade (Glenn Ford) and his gang are captured. Wade's men break out of jail and wait for a chance to rescue him. The authorities suspect that a daring escape plan is underway, so they look for a guard to escort Wade by train to Yuma to stand trial. The marshal offers a bounty and Dan Evans (Van Heflin), a poor rancher hit hard by a crippling drought, takes the job. His wife pleads with him to save his own life by letting Wade go free, but for Evans, it's a matter of principle as well as money. He takes Wade and begins the dangerous trek to the station.

One of the greatest Western of all time?

| | See all MultiRegion's reviews (30)

The '3:10 to Yuma' must surely be in any fan of the Western genre Top 10. The story is excellent, as is the performance of Van Heflin, Felicia Farr and Glenn Ford. One of the greatest all time Westerns.

The tension that mounts as Heflin and Ford wait for the train to arrive at the station whilst surrounded by Fords gang of outlaws is unbeatable!
The tension between Glenn Ford and Felicia Farr in the saloon is great too. I miss that in the 2007 remake.
Shot in widescreen black & white, what boosts the suspense of this outstanding Western.
We may find one 'goof' however: during the credits we may see condensestripes of an '50s aeroplane, above the fast driving stagecoach.

Summary: the '3:10 to Yuma' from 1957 is very recommended. Look forward to a Blu-ray release.

 a very good traditional western

based on a story by elmore leonard, you can be sure this one is a real western with all the traditional ingredients, written by a real western writer (see also: hombre, valdez is coming, ....)
compared to the remake, the 1957 version is far more original. the remake is a modernised version with more shooting and violence, more action-loaded. knowing the original this action-load, the many shoot-outs and violence are not necessary ingredients: the story stands on its own and does very well with the limited action
the performances of both ford an heflin are good, they carry the movie.
and also, the end of the original is much more recommended!
