In 1970, John Wayne earned an Academy Award for his larger-than-life performance as the drunken, uncouth and totally fearless one-eyed U.S. Marshal, Rooster Cogburn. The cantankerous Rooster is hired by a headstrong young girl (Kim Darby) to find the man who murdered her father and fled with the family savings. When Cogburn's employer insists on accompanying the old gunfighter, sparks fly. And the situation goes from troubled to disastrous when the inexperienced but enthusiastic Texas Ranger (Glen Campbell) joins the party. Laughter and tears punctuate the wild action in this extraordinary Western which features performances by Robert Duvall and Strother Martin.

an old john wayne with a raspy voice and a lot of grit... they don't come along this way very often.
also a strong leading role for a woman without being ridiculous, together with the must-have-topics of a true classical western.
this one is to be seen and enjoyed.
curious what the coen-brothers do with it in their remake of the classic movie.

 My favourite western

This is my favourite western. I think that this film is truly fantastic and I enjoyed every moment of it. The way the characters interact with eachother throughout the film keeps you interested and with a great story to go with this it simply doesn't dissapoint. I know that this film is not mentioned in the same breath as other great westerns such as The Good, The Bad and The Ugly but in my opinion, once you have seen this you too will also appreciate this as the true classic that it is.

 Rooster Cogburn, a true legend

John Wayne gets his Oscar for playing one of those characters that everyone loves. We laugh when he laughs, we are happy when he is happy and so on. Kim darby is also very good as a headstrong young girl who hires Wayne. Singer Glen Campbell tries to lend a hand too. Look out for a youngish Dennis Hopper and Robert Duvall. Some moments are let down as you know it ain't real watch when Wayne "cuts" Darby's arm after she is poisoned

*After the murder of her Father Teenage Tomboy Mattie Ross recruits the help of a hardline Marshall "Rooster" Cogburn (John Wayne) & Texas Ranger La Boeuf to help her track down the murderer.
*This really is a classic film. Its a great picture. There's some great acting, especially from John Wayne & Kim Darby. The script is also very good and provides some laughs. Its also a great story with some twist & turns & some good action. Very Iconic film. Well worth a watch.
