Sergio Leone's monumental epic 'Once Upon A Time In The West' ranks among the five or six all-time Western masterpieces. The picture itself is as big as its Monument Valley locations, as grand as its fine, distinguished cast. Henry Fonda plays the blackest character of his long career. He's Frank, the ruthless, murderous psychopath who suffers conscience pangs after annihilating an entire family. Jason Robards is the half-breed falsely accused of the terrible slaughter. Charles Bronson plays the harmonica playing man who remembers how his brother was savagely tortured.

Brilliantly directed by Leone and accompanied by one of Ennio Morriconne's greatest scores, this glorious picture helped re-establish the Western's significance. Watch out for that lengthy opening titles sequence...
  • Audio commentary track from directors John Carpenter, John Milius & Alex Cox, film historian Sir Christopher Frayling and Dr. Sheldon Hall plus cast and crew

Leone's super-western is packed to the rafters with grit, style, and grandeur. The opening is a widescreen lesson in anticipation. The three bounty-killers kill time at the railway station plagued by creaking and buzzing, bored and mischievous, over-confident and smug. They have a right to be, after all this is Woody Strode, Jack Elam, and Marco Zuanelli; veterans of the cinematic west and as tough as they come. Leone revels in the perverse amount of time it takes the credits to lazily roll onto the screen, as the audience wait for the train to pull into their trap. Unfortunately for them they are the ones who will never leave the station...

Once Upon A Time In The West (1969) - *****
From its first gritty shootout, to it's final showdown, Once Upon A Time In The West is a highly charged, superbly made piece of cinema. It leaves the viewer reeling, whether from the sublimely melancholy music and use of sound, or its crackling performances and stunning backdrop. It has all the usual Western ingredients; an old gunslinger here, a vengeful nomad there, a widow, train roofs and Charles Bronson and you're done. However, what this film has different is it's brute intensity, achieved through startling turns from Henry Fonda and Bronson, coupled with it's hard-to-ignore morals. As the three men fight for land, money and the girl, it's clear each of them is doomed in their own way. It's a difficult film to comment on, as every shred of it's perfectly thought out brilliance has been said before. A masterpiece.

Have wanted to see this western for a long time.I had heard it was a classic.I have read numerous reviews about it and decided to purchase it.I recieved it within a few days of ordering it and sat down that night to watch it.After the first ten minutes it starts to settle down and once Ennio Morriconnes music score kicks in you are hooked. It is fantastic. It is an epic on a grand scale.Beautifully shot, magnificent scenery, great music score and the quality of the dvd is fantastic.I cannot see hd being much better as it is near perfect. At the end of the film I just sat there feeling stunned as it was such a brilliant film.I then started watching some of the scenes over again. In all Sergio Leone has made probably the greatest western ever made.Awesome.Well worth five stars and for the price a bargain.

I'm not really a fan of "western" films but this is the exception, I love this film. The music the locations the characters the story are all grate. Its one of those films every body should see like Goodfellas or Terminator.

 Better Quality than Bluray "YES"
