Three years after he made 'The Dirty Dozen', Robert Aldrich returned to the theme of war and not only produced and directed but wrote the story and screenplay for this action-packed adventure epic, featuring reluctant heroes and a stunning climax.

It is November 1942 and the US launches a major naval offensive in the South Pacific. To ensure that the battle plans remain secret, a Japanese radio installation must be destroyed and so an American naval officer is ordered by his commander to join a squad of British misfits. However, when the ragtag band learns of secret Japanese plans, what began as a simple suicide mission becomes a war.

I actually think this is better than the more famous Dirty Dozen Robert Aldrich made three years before. It`s tough and cynical from the outset with some memorable performances(Caine is on top form)and sharp crisp dialogue.Robertson is also good as the reluctant Yank, who expecting a cushy war, unbelievably ends up on combat patrol with a bunch of unwashed, unfed, unsynpathetic limeys. The patrol gradually gets worn down by infighting and the Japanese take a toll during the trek home.Memorable scenes include the patrol being taunted by the Japanese via hidden loudspeakers in the jungle and the unforgettable ending as the survivors make their dash.Brilliant film and needs a nice dvd special edition.
