Based upon the final instalment of JRR Tolkiens most famous novel, THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING follows the story of Frodo Baggins epic quest to destroy the Ruling Ring of the Dark Lord Sauron.

Filming such a much-loved and complex book was always going to be difficult, but director Peter Jackson pulls it off in style. For starters, everything looks authentic, due to involving John Howe and Alan Lee, the best known Tolkien artists, in the creative process. Then there is the cast; Elijah Wood plays a fantastic Frodo, Sir Ian McKellan simply IS Gandalf the Grey, and Liv Tyler is beautifully graceful as Elven Princess Arwen. Viggo Mortensen impresses as Aragorn, and Sean Bean is suitably brooding as tragic hero Boromir.

Naturally there are omissions and changes from the book, as even a running time of 3 hours could not possibly cover all the novels complexities, but these are easily forgiven due to the brilliant way the film has been handled. A sweeping score by Howard Shore adds another dimension to an almost perfect film, which well deserved the four Oscars it received.

One of the greatest fantasy films of all time, THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING only misses out on 5 Stars due to the Extended Edition being superior.
