Though Wes Craven's 1977 original remains the better of the two Alexandre Aja delivers a gore-drenched remake that both fans of the original and newcomers alike can enjoy. Certainly never holding back on the amount of blood shed on screen - especially in this Uncut form - Aja delivers a remake that, unlike so many others of its kind, actually expands and improves upon the original. Altering the original to include the concepts of nuclear testing certainly adds much to the narrative and allows the FX guys to go to town with an army of disfigured, mutant designs. However impressive they all are though, one can't help but remember how chilling Michael Berryman was in the original, an actor who needed no makeup to achieve the same effect. But still, 'Hills Have Eyes' remains a quality remake, much as I despise Hollywoods current insistence on remaking classic horror if they all achieve this quality perhaps I'll finally shut up...
There is something about The Hills Have Eyes that sets it apart from other films of a similar genre and angle. I'm not sure what it is exactly, but it is definitely apparent when watching this film that you are watching something that will shake and perturb you for a long time to come.
I'm not sure whether its the weirdly plausible story line, the perfectly intense horror timing that sees you leaning towards the screen, eyes glued on the prospective horror, only to be thrown back in sheer terror the next, or whether it's simply the luscious colourings of every rich, red blood spatter.
Sure there are some scenes which border on pure disgust, but overall it is generally a likable, and truly terrifying piece of cinematic production.
Everyone i know loves this film, so i finally sat down to see what all the fuss is about and i thought it was pants. not original not very scary at all. There was the odd funny moments. But i think i'd sooner watch paint dry!
All the usual ingredients are here but the recipe lacks piquancy. Aja delivers nothing that we haven't seen before and his treatment of these familiar themes isn't particularly memorable either. Having said that, there's nothing badly wrong with this movie: it delivers plenty of gore and reasonable, but not memorable, levels of tension; we have the usual two-dimensional characters who are by turns incredibly stupid and quite inventive; and we have the insanely psychopathic bad guys. The problem is that I've seen it done more effectively elsewhere.
This is a high intense horrific film that will make saw and hostels atrocities look like grazed knees and Chinese burns. It is full of gore blood and high impact violence and brakes the boundaries of the whole meaning of gore and blood and scary faces. Not for the faint hearted, this brutal film will leave you speechless leaving you wanting more and all the more scary because it could so easily happen to you in everyday life. Think of wrong turn and Timest it by ten if ever a film should be banned this is it.
