 Cracking Yarn

Well, that 1 star review was obviously from someone used to CGI with everything...even his fries! This film is classic sci-fi, good conclusion of the story, good acting (well, from all bar Mark Hamill) and great special effects (the space scenes look real, not CGI'd up to the hilt). The Ewoks are a little disappointing, but remember this was family entertainment, so they're supposed to be something for the children. Brilliant that they've released the original cuts (the special editions really took away the atmos of the originals). Any way, if it wasn't for the newer films (Phantom Menace etc.) I would have shaken Mr Lucas by the hand and thanked him for creating my first childhood memories. These films were cracking good yarns in the late seventies/early eighties and they're still cracking today.

This is a excellent conclusion to this much loved saga. The film starts well, with the rescue of Han from Jabbas palace, and rattles along at break neck pace to the rousing conclusion. But the film does have it's fault. The Bloody EWOKS is my main problem. It's as if Lucas was thinking how many toys he could sell, and not if these irritating creations make any sence. How could a bunch of Midgets in Bear outfits take on the Empire ? These furry critters are great when you 8 years old, but when you in your mid Thirty's they grate more than JAR-JAR-BLOODY-BINKS. I love the bit where the Ewok gets shot, there should be more scenes of that kind of wooly carnage ! also there are so many puppet creations that it starts to feel like the Muppet show in Space. But when the film gets it right, it pulls out all the stops. This is the only Star Wars movie that the Special Addition 20 years later improved on. As the original ending with the Bloody Ewoks singing and dancing was shocking. The film does have some faults, but how could anybody improve on the perfection of The Empire Strikes Back ?This is still one of the greatest sci-fi fantasies movies ever made, and to tie up all the loose ends in the two hour period it has done a brilliant job, yes some of the conclusions seem a little rushed and could have been better explained with a chapter seven, but that is the child side of me speaking on my behalf, But the film is still far better than THE PHANTOM MENACE and THE ATTACK OF THE CLONES !
If you want a brilliant sci-fi soap opara buy this now. But the chances are you already have, to complete the rest of the Star Wars saga. Excellent !

I couldnt believe how cheap this DVD is. For the original theatrical edition alone you would expect to spend more than that, but what a bonus you get the remastered version as well. Watch the original 1983 version then see how much has been added. Thank you play.com
