Yellowbeard is the ultimate pirate feared by whoever travels the high seas. A true scurvy shyster of the highest order and nautical scallywag in league with the devil. The kind of man who feasts on the hearts of his enemies and then forces them to eat their own lips. After twenty years of being imprisoned for tax evasion Yellowbeard escapes to reclaim his treasure with the Royal Navy and various adversaries on his trail. But fate intervenes when he discovers he has an illegitimate son, a studious, academic land lover who likes books and stuff.
Written by comedy legends Graham Chapman (The Life Of Brian) and Peter Cook (Bedazzled, Derek And Clive Get The Horn), Yellowbeard is a prime example of off the wall, madcap, anarchic eighties humour. Featuring appearances from other Monty Python members John Cleese and Eric Idle, plus a startling array of comedy stars including Cheech And Chong (Up In Smoke), Madeline Kahn (Blazing Saddles), Spike Milligan (The Goon Show, Q), Nigel Planer (The Young Ones), Susannah York (Superman), Beryl Reid (Psychomania), James Mason (Heaven Can Wait) and a cameo from David Bowie.

I can't say I loved it or hated it but I saw it at the weekend for the first time in about 20 years. It was better than I remember, although its very much a hit and miss affair. It follows the exploits of cruel pirate Yellowbeard and those who would steal his hidden treasure. John Cleese as a blind pirate is quite funny, its irreverent and some of the gags are priceless. I got a little bored in the final third when the writers seemed to have run out of jokes but overall its a watchable film, especially if you like slapstick or Monty Python. Also look out for Jabberwocky.
A must-have movie

A great movie, I'm still laughing at it after watching it innumerable times. It's a bit of a marmite movie, you'll either love it or hate it, I love it. There are so many repeatable lines and nothing is taken seriously. Buy it, blag it or borrow it!
