The final series of The West Wing was very much a realistic end of an era transition from one President to another
Taking the place of Josiah Bartlett, The Greatest Screen President of All Time was always gonna be a very hard act to follow.
So the series mixes up White House storylines with Santos and Viniks Presidential campaigns, giving the viewer a much needed insight into how the election process works, and kind coming full circle to the Bartlett Administration.
In general the show is still very entertaining and very well written, but I feel they got the Toby Zeigler storyline wrong. He would never have done that!!!
Some friendly faces from the past return in small roles, The LIVE debate show was very well done.
Overall it is a fitting final series.

As we know, the 5th season saw the departure of the shows creator/writer aaron sorkin, and rob lowes character sam seaborne, both vacancies glaringly obvious.however, the show continued in good form, albiet without itrs twinkle in its eye.season 7,west wings final season, concentrates on the presidential election, between congressman matt santos (jimmy smits) and senator arnold vinick (alan alda). The highlight of the season is a live debate, that was actually transmitted live at the time.one of the low points is the departure of a main character. Spoiler alert here, but as most west wing fans have already seen it, its not really a spoiler. There is a security breach,in which highly classified information is leaked to the press. It is discovered that this was made by toby ziegler, played by richard schiff.during the show's final season, schiff says he felt let down by the writers as some of his episodes were cut "purely on a financial decision." he hated the military shuttle leak storyline, which saw his character indicted for leaking classified information. "Toby would never in 10 million years have betrayed the president in that fashion," says schiff. "Even if he had, there would have been seven episodes' worth of fights before he did it." he justified the story to himself by reasoning that toby was covering for somebody else. Still worth buying to complete the series, and the acting is still first class, but just dont expect it to be anywhere near the brilliance of the first 5 seasons.
