What are the limits of justice? Of social responsibility? 'The Accused' takes a powerful and thought-provoking look at human nature and individual moral conscience, and a judicial process that treats the victim like a criminal.
Jodie Foster gives an Oscar-winning performance as the hard-living, fiercely independent Sarah Tobias, who is gang-raped in the back of a neighbourhood bar. But that is only the beginning of her ordeal. Now Sarah finds herself battling the legal system not once but twice as she and her attorney (Kelly McGillis) go after both her attackers and the onlookers whose cheering fuelled and encouraged the assault.

The most disturbing scene I have ever seen. Foster was fantastic and so deserved the Oscar for this powerhouse of a film.
Outstanding performance by Jodie Foster in powerful drama.

I've seen this film about 20 times and it still has the same powerful effect on me. This is such a brilliant portrayal of one woman's fight for justice.
The story of a vulnerable woman who gets gang raped in a local bar and hires an attorney to put those responsible behind bars is incredibly powerful in itself but with the added bonus of a powerhouse performance by Jodie Foster as the victim including an excellent Kelly McGillis in support, it seems this film is poignant today as it was when it came out back in 1988.
This is a terrific drama that is brilliantly handled by the director Jonathan Kaplan.
