THE BOOK of the Twentieth Century is about to become the DVD event of the Twenty-first.

In a time before history, in a place called Middle-earth, a dark and powerful lord has brought together the forces of evil to destroy its cultures and enslave all life caught in his path. Sauron's time has come and he needs only one small object - a Ring that has been lost for centuries - to snuff out the light of civilization and cover the world in darkness.

An epic adventure of good against evil, a story of the power of friendship and individual courage, and the heroic quest to pave the way for the emergence of mankind, J.R.R. Tolkien's master work The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

A great film, but the Extended Version is better.

Based upon the final instalment of JRR Tolkiens most famous novel, THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING follows the story of Frodo Baggins epic quest to destroy the Ruling Ring of the Dark Lord Sauron.

Filming such a much-loved and complex book was always going to be difficult, but director Peter Jackson pulls it off in style. For starters, everything looks authentic, due to involving John Howe and Alan Lee, the best known Tolkien artists, in the creative process. Then there is the cast; Elijah Wood plays a fantastic Frodo, Sir Ian McKellan simply IS Gandalf the Grey, and Liv Tyler is beautifully graceful as Elven Princess Arwen. Viggo Mortensen impresses as Aragorn, and Sean Bean is suitably brooding as tragic hero Boromir.

Even ten years after its original release, the special effects are still spectacular, and the story is both intriguing and exciting, with never a dull moment and rarely a slowing of pace. Naturally there are omissions and changes from the book, as even a running time of 3 hours could not possibly cover all the novels complexities, but these are easily forgiven due to the brilliant way the film has been handled. A sweeping score by Howard Shore adds another dimension to an almost perfect film, which well deserved the four Oscars it received.

One of the greatest fantasy films of all time, THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING only misses out on 5 Stars due to the Extended Edition being superior.

This is a must see film whether you've seen anything like it before or not. This action packed film has some amazing actors and the action/effects are so life like. This film will be over within a blink of an eye because you get so drawn into the story line.

I must admit that this is my least favourite of the trilogy as it takes a while to get going but it builds a strong platform for the 2 sequels. Once again Peter Jackson has made a visual masterpiece and once with a very strong plot too. Not too much action but the fact its a fantasy adventure with an awesome cast makes this a very good watch. Enjoy

The Lord of the Rings is always going to some of my favourite films of all time, they sure are long yet never a dull moment in them, always something going on to keep the entertainment flowing.

Favourite character has got to be Aragorn played by Viggo Mortensen, just because he is like a daddy figure to Frodo and Sam and also because he kicks ass.
