In a time before history, in a place called Middle-earth, a dark and powerful lord has brought together the forces of evil to destroy its cultures and enslave all life caught in his path. Sauron's time has come and he needs only one small object - a Ring that has been lost for centuries - to snuff out the light of civilization and cover the world in darkness.

An epic adventure of good against evil, a story of the power of friendship and individual courage, and the heroic quest to pave the way for the emergence of mankind, J.R.R. Tolkien's master work The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

     Well worth the extra

I was initially reluctant to go for the extended editions of these films as I hate breaking the flow of a movie by changing disks. However, I'm glad now that I made the upgrade.

First of all, the extended edition of the Fellowship of the Ring puts back some important plot elements which were dropped from the theatre version - most notably the scenes where the fellowship is given their gifts by Galadriel. There are other new scenes and some others are also extended.

Then you also get a DTS soundtrack thrown in - and if ever there was a movie designed to make the most of DTS this is it.

Finally, there are the extras - two whole disks of extras. I wouldn't normally recommend a DVD for the extras, but this is not the usual self-congratulary fluff you get with so many disks these days. Each disk is stuffed with a number of in depth documentaries covering all aspects of the film - sets, special effects, locations, cast - you name it. These can be played individually or all together, and they are full of humour and fascinating anecdotes - e.g. I bet you can't guess what a Galadrilight or a bigature is? You'll have to buy the disk if you want to know. It's clear that everybody had a lot of fun making the films.

It all adds up to a very good value package. If you want to see LOTR as it was meant to be see, this is the version for you.

     In a word "brilliant"

Extremely true to the books, the three Lord Of the Rings films are absolutely superb. Brilliant special effects, excellent casting, you just can't criticise any element of the films at all. The extended versions are well worth it. They don't just add in meaningless shots, they add in critical story elements that were omitted from the cinema versions to keep the films a reasonable length. The additions change the light the story is portrayed in, and while not absolutely essential, add real depth. They can not be recommended highly enough. The books tell a huge story and long films are needed to retell the story accurately. Immerse yourself into the extended versions and you will find it well worth it.

This film was just about as interesting as blank cd?!

Its just to long! It takes a lot of patience to be able to watch this film. And now they have released an extended version with an extra 30mins =/ I make that about, 3h and 15m =|

I wouldn't bother with these films lol
