When the TARDIS lands in on Earth in a quarry, the Doctor and Sarah are caught in a mining explosion. She is found clutching what appears to be a fossilised hand, buried in 150 million-year-old strata. Analysis shows the hand to be silicon-based and inert, but when Sarah begins to act as if possessed, the Doctor suspects that it may still be alive...

It's a shame that actors are often given their best acting chance in their final story; in addition to her usual playful role as the Doctor's assistant, in fact, Elizabeth Sladen gets a chance to play the evil-possessed minion, and succeeds wonderfully.
The plot is quite straightforward but interesting (nevermind the terrible nuclear physics, this is Doctor Who!), and strengthened in the later episodes by the two faces of the sympathetic and tragic character of Eldrad. In Sarah's words, 'I quite liked her, but I couldn't stand him.'
And if all this wasn't enough, be ready to shed tears at the goodbye scene between Sarah and the Doctor. It rarely gets better than this.
As Sarah Jane Smith's final classic story The Hand of Fear is a minor triumph, a very entertaining and atmospheric story with some nice directorial flourishes and superb performances from the cast all-round. The final scenes between The Doctor and Sarah are beautifully played by Tom and Liz, and make for a particularly poignant end to a superb little adventure. The features are decent enough, not quite up to the usual standard but the commentary is fantastic and this is a great overall package and a crucial addition to any fan's collection.
