Three million years ago, a radiation leak killed the crew of the mining ship, Red Dwarf. The only survivor was Dave Lister, the chicken soup machine repairman. He spends his time on the ship with a holographic projection of Arnold Rimmer (his dead bunkmate), Cat (a life-form that evolved from his cat) and Holly (the ship's senile computer)...

The End: A radiation leak wipes out the crew of the mining ship Red Dwarf. Leaving one survivor - Chicken Soup Machine Repair Man, Dave Lister. After three million years suspended animation, Lister emerges to find he is the last human being in the universe, but he is not alone.

Future Echoes: When Red Dwarf breaks the speed of light, time dilates, and the new crew begin to experience visions from their own futures. Sadly for Lister, his future appears to include being reduced to his component atoms by a rather large explosion. Happily for Rimmer, Lister's future appears to include being reduced to his component atoms by a rather large explosion.

Balance Of Power: Rimmer encounters his most dangerous blood chilling challenge ever - Lister is taking his chef's exam. If Lister passes he will hold sufficient rank to have Rimmer replaced as the ships hologram. Just how low will the universes most obnoxious dead man stoop to stop him?

Confidence And Paranoia: Lister contracts a mutated pneumonia virus. The hallucinations of his fevered brain materialise in solid form, and suddenly the ship is beset by herring rain and exploding sixteenth century mayors of Warsaw. When his fever breaks, Lister wakes up to find he has created personifications of his Confidence and Paranoia, and a war of manipulation begins.

Waiting For God: Holly, the ship's computer, recovers a strange unidentified pod floating in the frozen wastes of Deep Space. Rimmer is convinced it contains the remains of a long-dead alien warrior, and immediately begins a scientific investigation to decipher the pods hieroglyphics. Meanwhile, Lister's rather mundane day perks up a little when he discovers he is a God.

Me2: Rimmer creates his perfect companion: an identical duplicate of himself. He moves out of his quarters he shares with Lister and starts rooming with his doppelganger. At first things are blissful but the course of true love never runs smoothly, and soon the two Rimmers find themselves locked in a conflict so fierce, only one of them can survive...

 Brilliant first series

I love Red Dwarf and this DVD doesn't let the series down. It has all 6 episodes from the first series on the first disc and a load of extras on the second.
My recommendation would be to listen to the commentary on the first disc as well. You have commentary from all the cast which is interesting and in a lot of places really funny.

 Best show ever

Top 100 DVD Reviewer

Without a doubt this has to be the best british tv show of all time.
from the first series aboard red dwarf itself nothing special was needed because the whole concept between Lister and Rimmer was pure geniuse and the Cat well what can you say Danny john jules was my favourite.
although the FX were not that good to be honest it didnt need to be because the chemistry between the actors was awesome ans as the action was move outside red dwarf as the series wnet buy the show just kept getting better and better.
heres to hoping we see the long awaited movie in the future.

 It's cold outside...

The year was 1988 and, flicking through the television schedules one night, I happened upon a new series entitled 'Red Dwarf' Billed as a science-fiction comedy I was initially unsure quite what to expect but am I glad I decided to tune in. The adventures of Dave Lister ran from 1988 till 1999 over 8 series and 52 episodes and remain one of the greatest comedy series ever produced by the BBC. As much a science fiction show as a sinple comedy the characters and storylines were inspired and the series cult fanbase grew and grew. With this, the DVD of Series 1 you get a chance to see how it all began (the re-released re-mastered re-jigged VHS versions are best forgotten) and, though the sets and FX are shaky at best (Think early Dr. Who) the writing, acting and comedy is without equal. Over the first 6 episodes we are slowly introduced to the crew of Red Dwarf, the aforementioned curry-lover and last human Dave Lister (wonderfully portrayed by Craig Charles) the uptight genius that is Arnold J Rimmer (Craig Barrie on outstanding form) the cool-as-a-cucumber Cat (a suitably whacked out Danny John Jules) and Holly, the ships computer with an IQ of 6,000 (The equivalent of 6000 PE teachers). The cast and crew would increase in subsequent series but the writing was pin-sharp from the very first scene. The DVD itself is a thing of great beauty, obviously created by people who appreciate the fans. Superb themed menus and two discs crammed full of deleted scenes, commentaries by all the cast, featurettes and hidden easter eggs this is a fantastic presentation of a grounbreaking sci-fi comedy. But even better than that the show, and the DVDs, just got better...

I recommend this to anyone that has even the smallest sense of humour in them. Each episode will leave you in stiches. Must be one of my favourite comidies ever plus its british. The characters are amazing and im sure most people can relate to Lister in one why and i feel sorry for you if you relate to Rimmer.
