  Solid boxing flick

I really enjoy boxing films, Raging Bull, Rocky's, The Boxer and the rest of them. So I had to give this a go and its very entertaining, especially interesting if you don't know too much about Muhammad Ali's career, Will Smith portrays the confident, stylish, witty boxer brilliantly.

  life story of a legend

never a greater boxer than ali, he was and still is a legendary figure!
just like ray charles for example, he has a remarkable life story to tell.
this movie's a biopic, and not exactly a boxing movie. so if you would expect an action movie: there are some excellent action scenes, but it's mainly a biographical movie, a documentary, a history lesson (about racism, malcolm x, the fight for equal rights)
will smith does a good job playin ali, as does jamie foxx as his 'spiritual coach'.

Repetitve, shallow and far too long

I thought that Will Smith would make the perfect Ali, unfortunately the script in the film is absolutely terrible. The majority of the movie is taken up by uninspiring action sequences with Will Smith training in the gym or fighting while background music plays and this becomes very boring and tedious as the action sequences are dull with little drama conveyed and worst of all there is no dialogue explaining what is going on in many sequences throughout the movie and you are left guessing as to what exactly is happening. Ali barely utters a word for the first half hour of the film which is unbelievable given that the man was so talkative and loud, in fact I have never seen such a long film with so little dialogue.
The storyline is very confusing and badly written and new characters aren't properly introduced and I was completely lost at numerous points such as to what was going on with his wives as his first marriage only lasts a few minutes before his second wife appears without any explanation as to what happened. To understand the film you need to already have a knowledge of Ali's life otherwise you will be lost like I was until I researched it on the net. Overall the characters are very shallow and predictable and there is no exploration of the motives driving Ali and Ali doesn't come across as being the great witty entertainer that he was, in fact he is very one dimensional and I got the impression all the time and effort was spent on the background music and action sequences and the dialogue was just an afterthought quickly put together to try and link things together.
In summary there are far too many needless boring action sequences with Ali boxing in the gym or training and far too little dialogue and humour, and the film could easily be made to last about 90mins as you get sick of watching sequences with no dialogue to explain what is happening.

FORGET WHAT YOU THINK YOU KNOW!

It's a crime Will Smith never got the best actor oscar for his pefectect performance of the great Ali. But then again the film also should have got best picture aswell. The film is a truly epic acount of the major events in the life of this outstanding boxer. Forget Rocky's melodrama. This film has as much to do with the history of the time, including civil rights and the vietnam war, as much as it has to do with the highs and lows of Ali's life. Most of his story you may already know, as it has been documented that many times, but the film has many suprising secrets up it's sleeve. As Ali fights his own personal demons aswell as the contenders in the ring.
This is a truly hypnotic and spellbinding film, with brilliant direction from Michael Mann, and an amazing support cast that includes John voight and Jamie Foxx. But most of all this is a celabration of a man whose wit and athletic genius, defiant rage and inner grace, that will last with him forever.
This film is a modern masterpiece and can stand toe to toe with Raging Bull as the best boxing films ever made.
Genius!

And he didnt even win best actor for this? Travesty!
You watch interviews of Ali, and then you watch this film, and you realise how alike they actually are. His smug arrogant attitude is so well played you'd think your watching someone following ali himself with a camera.
With real fight scenes, you know how dedicated Smith was to making this perfect and i believe he succeeded in this in every way.

"Rumble boy Rumble" as so effortly put by the brilliant Will Smith as perhaps the greates sportsman ever: Muhammed Ali. This film mainly shows the most signifcant part over a decade of Cassius Clay's life from first winning the title, through to refusing to go to the Vietnam War & then regaining the title from the formidable George Forman. No wonder Will Smith was Oscar nominated for his part as he plays Ali very well. He must have been taking lessons from Stallone's Rocky with regards to been in shape for this film. Great Stuff.
