This was an interesting story about how aliens are monsters, but humans are even more so. But it wasn't the Torchwood I knew and loved from S1 & S2. Torchwood was overshadowed by the aliens and the politicians, and really, it was a shocking dissapointment.
How are they going to come back from that?! Don't worry - I'm going to be careful not to give anything away. If you didn't watch it live, you missed an amazing shared viewing experience - every aspect of the show was cranked up above the previous standard of 10 occasionally achieved before, to an resounding 11. This made it not only superb Torchwood, but superb television drama, full stop. It was a devastating story in so many ways, and didn't progress at all the way I'd imagined, watching each part daily (Kudos to Russell T Davies and the other writers for taking the least predictable line each time, although as with many of Russell's most satisfying plots, the resolution was cleverly foreshadowed earlier in the story). The "456" are an amazing alien concept (we know neither exactly what they look like, where they're from, or even what they're actually called! - none of which proves important) and very intelligently realised on screen: as mysterious at the end as they were on first appearance. The story contained elements of the best "invasion" SF, with particular nods to Quatermass, The Midwich Cuckoos, and A For Andromeda for those who would appreciate them, and the more serious viewpoint of a mirror held up to modern society (And what a very sad, and topical, reflection it gave). There was some humour, much of it dark, such as the true motive behind the "456" being here. The real beauty of this story though, was that you didn't have to have watched Torchwood before to "get" what was happening. It was self-contained and all the important plot points were resolved. There was also something very powerful about the format of a 5-part, week-spanning mini-series, and I'd like to see more drama done like that. But, I repeat my first question: how does Torchwood come back from this? I hope it wasn't the potential climactic "rounding off" of the series that was more than hinted at in the conclusion by several of the plot points. I have a feeling it wasn't, and that we're being teasingly toyed with. After all, everything changes...
Yes torchwood has been rumoued to be coming back for a 4th series WOO !!!!
Well I was VERY skeptical about only getting 5 episodes for a 3rd season :( didnt think they could live up to series 1 and 2 but I was thankfully proved wrong.
This had me hooked after the 1st episode couldnt wait for the next day (5 days in total)
The cast were brilliant even tho they lost 2 members last year it allowed the remaining 4 a bigger limelight. and more insight to yanto and jacks back stories.
It was action packed, funny and heatbreaking!
TOTALLY recommended and a worthy addition to the Torchwood era
If you've watched and loved the first two seasons, you may want to stay away from series three!
These are not the characters from season one and two. The third season is the "Gwen show" with guest stars Rhys, Jack and Ianto.
Two stars, because the storyline is rather interesting, especially if you've never watched an episode before. But be aware, that this season has way more gore and an overall darker theme than anything before. Definitly not recommended for children.
I've watched season three, but for me the Torchwood I loved ended with season two!
When i first heard the 3rd series of torchwood was going to be 5 hours long episodes show in one week i (like most people) was expecting a bit of a flop. boy was i proved wrong. it was fast paced and easy to follow. I am a huge torchwood fan and was very happy when i watched this season. i would recommend this to anyone!!!!
