Its taken a while but finally one of the most popular animes of all time has hit our shores. Inuyasha is the creation of Rumiko Takahashi (Ranma 1/2, Urusei Yatsura) whose manga and subsequent anime adaptions manage the impressive feat of being hugely popular not only in her native Japan, but also America and Europe.
The story centers around a time-traveling middle school student, a half-demon, a lecherous monk, a young fox demon, and a demon slayer who seek to restore the powerful Shikon Jewel and keep it out of the hands of the evil Naraku.
The DVD features the first 12 episodes, which introduces us to the two main characters (Inuyasha and Kagome) and sets up the series (which ran for an incredible 167 episodes). The reason Inuyasha is so popular (In my opinion, anyway) is that it combines humour, action, an intriguing, progressive plot and very well thought out and executed characters. The fact that all the main characters aren't introduced in this first series, shows the time and care the creators took to get the story right.
The DVD quality is great and although the lack of extras is dissapointing, 12 episodes for 20 quid is fantastic value. I would just like to add THIS DVD FEATURES BOTH THE SUBBED AND DUBBED VERSIONS, and not just the subbed one as stated in the synopsis (bad Play.com ;) ) . On that note, the dub is one of the best I've seen and although purists would argue the Japanese version is better, I personally prefer the English dub as I think the voice cast absolutely nailed it, but both are excellent so the choice is yours.
So if you've not yet experienced the joys of Inuyasha then I urge you to indulge yourself. I hope this little review was of some use to you and that you enjoy this feudal fairytale :)
