First off I love almost all things Superman. I love the original movies, Lois & Clark, the comics and numerous cartoons there have been over the years. While most interpertations are not perfect i still manage to find certain aspects that I enjoy. I think Smallville is a bad TV show but I enjoy the the great cast and occasional episode can really hit the mark.

Having said all this I can tell you now that 'Superman Returns' has absolutely no redeeming feature for me to enjoy. It fails on every level for me.

Set as a sequel to Superman II we are given a film that is completely void of any of the great mythology that has been built since that movie. Instead Singer rehashes ideas from a movie that is 25 years old.

Fact is Singer dropped the ball and made a boring, lacklustre movie that failed to capture the general publics imagination. I hope that WB are smart enough to not let a sequel go ahead.

For the best live action interpertations Id say buy Donner's original movie, the Donner cut of 'Superman II' and the first two seasons of 'Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman'.

Now someone call Michael Bay and get him to make a film with Tom Welling in the lead role.

The special effects are very good and there's some good insights into Superman's character. Brandon Routh makes a decent Superman, but not a great one. Basically, he's imitating the Christopher Reeve Superman, which is fine, I guess. The only problem is when you spend your time imitating someone else you'll always be second best. If there's another movie, I'd kind of like to see Routh put his own spin on Superman, rather than just trying to be the new Christopher Reeve.

A superhero movie wouldn't be a superhero movie without some type of threat to humanity to deal with and this "threat" is where most of my criticisms are centred.
