After the battle with General Zod and his gang of Kryptonian super-villains, Superman (Brandan Routh) mysteriously disappears for six years. After searching for more possible survivors from Krypton and finding none, Superman returns to Metropolis to re-assume the identity of Clark Kent. Once he returns, he discovers that Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth) is in a relationship and also has a son. Superman also discovers that Metropolis has learned to live without him, causing him to lose his motivation to fight and protect. To make matters worse, Superman's old nemesis Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey) has devised a plan to defeat the Man of Steel, for good. Superman must put his troubles behind him in order to protect his lost love, and the city who lost faith in him.

Superman Returns suffers from the same problem which afflicted Superman The Movie-a lack of supervillains.
Of course Luther is an excellent character and Spacey updates Hackman's original turn with a deadly verve, yet it was only when Zod and his fetishwear fiends arrive in Superman 2, that the franachise really exploded into life.
Returns has a lot going for it, not least a delicious twist which should see the second movie grab the imagination, but how long must we wait until we "kneel before Zod?"

Superman Returns follows on directly from Superman 2 (directed by Richard Donner) and sees our superhero return to earth after a 5 year gap. Fans of the previous films will instantly feel comfortable watching this film as it is very much in the same style as the first 2 Christopher Reeves films and seems to blend elements of into it (see the scenes with Marlon Brando and the opening title sequence (which is excellent)). As such this should instantly appeal to fans as it gives them exactly what they want to see in a style they like. A warning though I watched this film with someone who hadn't seen the previous films and they were bored with this film. Therefore the more you know about the back story the more enjoyment you will probably get out of this, so it might be an idea to check out the first two films first.

There are some really great super hero moments in this film such as superman being shot (you'll know when you see it) and watching the bullets fly of him, when he is trying to stop a plane from crashing or the final scenes on Lex's Krypton Island.

I watched this film again recently and my initial thoughts still rang true. Brandon Roth is perfect for the role of superman and carries of the legacy left by the late Christopher Reeves. Kate Bosworth, although I didn't like much on the first viewing, is actually OK in the role of Lois Lane. Choosing someone else may have been better but as she doesn't have the same strength that Margret Kidder brought to the character. However the relationship between her and Superman is very emotional and has an interested twist (which I won't spoil for you).

The overall story is written well and is in the same league as Batman Begins and Spiderman 1 and 2 (sadly not Spidey 3), standing out as one of the more polished films of the genre. The director Bryan Singer, continues his trend of making great super hero films (X-men, X-men 2) and this is I would say is his best one yet as it is a more emotionally charged and more character driven story than his previous films, showing once again his passion for the genre in the way that nobody else does.

A masterpiece of the superhero genre

Certainly one of the best superhero movies, not just since the 2000 resurrection of the genre, but ever. This is elegant, poetic, beautiful, graceful....truly uplifting. A wonderful movie.

 Uninspiring

I went into watch this film with great anticipation, being made by the guy responsible for XMEN. but I was definatley left uninspired. Kevin spacey as lex luthor, was like watching a watered down tasteless version of Gene Hackmans performance from the seventies. Unfortunately my final word on this film is dissapointed.

Could have been so much more.

Big disappointment Couldn't decide if it was a sequel or a reboot, it just sputtered between the two. Brandon's "Clark Kent" was so monotone that I thought Christopher Reeve would spin in his grave. Kate Bosworth was not a good choice for Lois. The entire film seemed to be trying to steal plot points from the original movie, even a lot of dialogue. It went from "let's pay homage" to "let's just copy the whole movie". Props to Brandon for sounding like Christopher Reeve's "Superman". Maybe it would have worked better if they weren't trying to make Brandon the new "Chris" but let him be his own Superman.
