Black Sun: The Nanking Massacre is an uncompromising portrayal of the war crimes perpetrated by the Japanese Imperial Army upon the Chinese military and civilian population of Nanking during the occupation of the city. Hailed by critics as one of the most disturbing films ever released, Black Sun: The Nanking Massacre is unflinching in it's depiction of the barbaric cruelty with which the occupying army raped, pillaged and terrorized the defeated populace.

From the acclaimed Chinese director T.F. Mou (Men Behind The Sun), Black Sun: The Nanking Massacre portrays the ordeals of the members of a poor Chinese family as they try to survive the Japanese occupation of their city. Two young children, Jean and John, escape with their uncle after witnessing the gruesome murder of their mother and father by Japanese soldiers. While feeling from the Japanese, they are separated and the children have to fend for themselves in the war torn city. the film lays bare the pitiless conduct of the Japanese army commanders as they attempt to subjugate the city by any means possible in order to further the cause of the Japanese domination of China and their pursuit of a Greater Asia under Japanese rule.

Tun Fei Mou does it again...

If you have seen any of Tun Fei Mou's other films you will already know what to expect. Like "Men Behind the Sun", this is a very graphic war pseudo-documentay on the Japanese taking over the Chinese during WW2. There are many scenes of distusting violence towards men, women and children mixed with real footage of actual events from the time. It can be hard to take sometimes but I found it really interesting. Also, being a gorehound I found it highly entertaining. Deffo check it out. Also, if you can find it check out Men Behind the Sun...you'll love it!

I Dident realy know what to exspect with this film,id never heard of it till i saw its review in a magazine last year,"& i like History & War films, ext, ext,"The review had the usual stuff about it being one sick film,& vile,"BUT"it did look like an interesting view,"It certainly is a Hard watch, its relentless in its Bleak vision of a horrible moment in time in history,"Its realeased on Tarten Grindhouse & it does have the odd scratch on the film & jumpy editing. So now to my conclusion, about 60mins into the film theres a scene that just floored me"anyone who hasent seen or heard of this film & likes realistic war films has to see this scene"Yes its horrible"but so is war & its buetifully staged,It was around this stage i started to ignore the Exploitation factor of the film & admire it as great peice of work,There are certain moments,& cinematograthy that in my opion make this a Mini Masterpeice,"All be it a very Grim one.

this film is brilliant hard to watch at times but well made but if you like your films to be honest unlike films the americans make just lately get tun fei mou's black sun he makes it with an unflinching eye with good documentary footage blending in with the film at the right times this director also made men behind the sun where he used real human limbs as special effects props so you will have some idea now of how gut wrenching black sun is what stayed with me after the film was the director talking at the end he says if you thought what you saw in this film was bad the last six weeks of the invasion there were even worst horrendous and bloody atrocities this film is upsetting and not for the faint hearted for mature viewers only

Here is a movie showing some of shocking and horrific incidents that took place during the infamous Nanking Massacre during the 2nd Sino-Japanese War.
The movie features a number of characters for both the Japanese and the Chinese locals, some are top ranking genearls, others are nothing more than newly orphaned toddlers.
This film brings us some of the goings on from the massacre, the scenes are difficult to watch and are truly horrific. The director doesn't spare you showing you the true cruelty first hand. There are numerous photographs and pieces of archive footage which are 100% fact, it shows the sinister and sickening scenes of the event.
The downfall of this movie is its neither a documentary or a film, with having no real storyline at times it can just feel like a jumble of scenes. Numerous horrific scenes of violence which just seem to be thrown at you.
Had their have been main characters who you got to know on a more personal level the true terror and fear of the situation would've really had an impact.

Overall: Black Sun is a difficult movie to watch, despite the most part being a film and not actual footage it still shocks the eye, the director has done well to show you some of the events which took place during the massacre.
Having said that, this could've been better, all it needed was a little flattening out to make this the Schindler's List of the East.

I dont quite know what to make of this one. I am a big fan of documentaries and (mainly due to a media exam) so I thought I'd go for this foreign documentary to see how it compares.

The representation of the whole situation is very graphic, as it is designed to be. But I think that sometimes the effects move the focus away from an educational narrative, and more towards a general hack 'n' slash movie.

In all fairness though I did think it was intriguing, but it didnt really keep me interested throughout. In my opinion I dont think I would have kept watching it other than for the fact I was particularly bored.

Worth buying for the price though to get an insight into what went on in the little heard of Nanking massacre.
