A young man begins an obsessive search for his girlfriend after she mysteriously disappears during their sunny vacation getaway. His three-year investigation draws the attention of her abductor, a seemingly mild-mannered professor who, in truth, harbors a diabolically clinical and calculating mind. When the kidnapper contacts the man and promises to reveal his lover's fate, The Vanishing unfolds with intense precision, culminating in a genuinely chilling finale that has unnerved audiences around the world.

You must watch this. I saw it 15 years ago and the chilling climax has stuck in my mind ever since. Brilliant.

 Fabulously Creepy

The 1988 original Vanishing film is so much better & creepier than the Hollywood remake 1993, with Jeff Bridges. Made by the same director George Sluizer who was obviously in it for the money the second time around. If you have ever been backpacking or caravaning around France you will be creeped out, if you haven't, you will still be creeped out. It's not cheesy like the Hollywood remake & the acting more believable. I saw this film years ago on tv late at night and I had been searching for it for ages. It is really worth it- it is obviously subtitled being a French/Dutch production but if that annoys you, you don't even notice that after a while because you really get into it- Fabulously creepy film-highly recommended.

 Top notch chiller

Disturbing original film made by a director who made a Hollywood version of the same movie a few years later. Unfortunately, the second film had a pat -"Hollywood, all loose ends tied up" happy ending. This film is more laid back and ordinary and is all the more effective for it.
