The first and best of all the 'Doctor' films, 'Doctor In The House' is a great film and is dated only, in all the best ways. It's based on the books by Richard Gordon and though a funny film, is not an 'out and out' gag feast, so it's not meant to be that !! - but rather an attempt to show a group of medical students, trying valiantly to scrape through their 1st year exams and put themselves onto the road to being Doctors, proper. Of course they have many amusing misadventures along the way and it's really a joy to watch !! One sometimes wishes that life was still the way it is presented in this film and time (1954) .... Well maybe it still is at St. Swithins, who knows !! .... 'Doctor In The House' is also responsible for six sequels ( I think ? ) my favourites being 'Doctor In Distress' & 'Doctor In Clover' .... Anyway it has a steller cast list that reads like a who's who of British cinema & comedy in general, for instance - Dirk Bogarde, James Robertson Justice, Kenneth More,… more »
