  Very Disappointing

Being a fan of Depp & Burton and expected a lot more from this film. I purchased it really because of the amount of excellent reviews on this site. Really disappointing. I actually fell asleep and missed the end and have no intentions of finding out what happened. Sorry.

A Feel Good Movie About a Tragic Director

| | See all drlowdon's reviews (468)

A biopic of Ed Wood, often voted the worst director of all time, telling the story of how he and his crew went about the movie making process.

Johnny Depp is of course no stranger to playing absurd characters and he is again never less than brilliant to watch throughout the movie. Watching Ed Wood refuse to let anything, be it bad reviews or malfunctioning sets, stop his dream of becoming a big Hollywood director is both funny yet strangely inspiring.

The fact that the movie ends before Wood's slide into alcoholism helps maintain the movies feel good factor making for an absurd yet enjoyable watch.

  PULL THE STRING

Only one of the world's best directors could make a movie about it's worst. Tim burton did a smashing job at re-creating the life of hollywood legend edward d wood jr and i'm very suprised that it didn't win best picture when it was made. Martin landau is amazing as lugosi and steels the show for me. The tiny details of each film ed made are fantastic and ed wood has finally got the appreciation and recognition that he finally deserves.
Johnny and tim have pulled it off once again.
It's perfect!

One of the most unlikely series of events to ever happen.

Yet most of it is true. after watching this film search online, and youll see pretty much all of it really happened, even the stuff you thought was put in just to be funny. Its hard to believe.

This film is about Edward D Wood Jr, "the worst director of all time". He makes 30 scenes a night instead of the usual 1, and unfinished scenes and obvious continuity mistakes are still "perfect!" to him.

Throughout all his failure, he fails to see how bad he was, and he had the determination to finish these films and release them even when he had nothing. He is a likeable character.

Along the way he meets some other people to star in his films, all notably strange, and all real. The actor who plays "Bela Lugosi" deserves a mention as he is really great. Bela lugosi is a real actor who played the original dracula, and really did run into Ed Wood one day as he was aging and starred in his films.

Well made, laugh out loud funny at times, and entertaining throughout, buy this, and witness the amazing story of Ed Wood.

Its also worth noting his main films are available on dvd

5/5 stars.

  Breathtaking Burton

How ironic that such a fantastic film should be made about one of the worst film makers of all time.
Ed Wood is typical Burton - warm, weird and great fun. The performances are superb - Depp has rarely been better, Murray is excellent but at its heart is a simply stunning performance from Martin Landau as Bela Legosi (fully deserving his Oscar).
If you haven't seen this yet then I urge you to give it a go.

  A SALUTE TO INCOMPETENCE!

This is still Tim Burtons best movie to date.
Ed Wood is a outstanding tribute to the worlds worst director. Shot in monochrome that recreates the 1950's world of Hollywood perfectly. The cast is outstanding, with every one turning in a pitch perfect performance, extra credit should go to Martin Landau and Johnny Depp. The film is warm and funny, and the recreation of the production of the movies are side splitting. It does not matter if you have never heared of the cross dressing "B" movie director, or any of his terrible films. This is a brilliant funny story that is perfectly told.
In the 1950's nobody would believe that Ed Wood would have a good story in him to make, so it's ironic that the one brilliant story he had was his life.
A classic!

  WITTY AND ENTERTAINING

Tim Burton and Johnny Depp team up for what is probably my favourite film that they have done together. This is a terrific performance from Johnny Depp and it is clear that the film is close to Tim Burtons heart as he treats every second of film like it matters. The film is well polished and stylishly made like most of his films.

There is quite a few big name actors and actresses involved here in roles that you usually wouldn't see them in. Sarah Jessica Parker, Patricia Arquette and Bill Murray to name a few.

I had never heard of Ed Wood before watching this film, I now understand why anybody trying to make independent films knows of him. The film does testiment to his obvious passion and drive.
