No Rules.

After a deadly security breach in the Joint Inter-Agency Task Force (JIATF), the FBI ask for help from the Miami authorities who are not part of the compromised group. This assignment goes to Detectives James 'Sonny' Crockett (Farrell) and Ricardo 'Rico' Tubbs (Foxx). Going undercover as offshore boat racers and outlaw smugglers Sonny Burnett and Rico Cooper, they take on the narcotrafficking network of the mysterious Archangel de Jesus Montoya-Londono and his Cuban Chinese banker Isabella (Gong Li) where the intensity of the case pushes Crockett and Tubbs out onto the edge. Identity and fabrication become blurred, cop and player become one...

Writer/director Michael Mann returns to the iconic 1980s series which he co-created. While the white Ferrari Testarossa, Jan Hammer synthesizer music and fashion excess may have been left behind with original duo Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas, Colin Farrell and Mann regular Jamie Foxx are more than a match in the new bigger, louder and just as thrilling big screen outing for Crockett and Tubbs!

I saw this movie in the cinema on the day it was released, and i hated it from 20mins in till the end, the cinema was full when i went in and nearly empty before it had finished. It was far too long, and far too boring, i even taped it on sky+ to see if it would be better.........and no it wasnt, defo a miss if your big on the series.... or just defo a miss. you wont feel left out if you havent seen it, ive yet to hear it be talked about for more than 5mins in a conversation.

I went to the cinema to see this, and I came away disapointed ! but on second viewing on DVD this film is a very good complex thriller. This has nothing to do with the 80's TV show, only Crocket and Tubbs names remain the same, the characters are very different. I can understand allot of people hateing this film as With all Michael ( HEAT ) Mann's films it's very stylish but it treats the audiance with intelligence and this film's plot is quite complex. Mann does not spend time trying to explain what's going on with all the double crossing and under cover operations, It's as if he's saying Get on the ride, and if you don't like it or can't understand it, then get off now ! He does not pull any punches or make excuses. The film oozes with warm clammy tention and the action is very real, swift and brutal. The final shoot out is the best shoot out since Mann directed HEAT. This is almost a 5 star movie, but some times it does feel a bit of style over substance, and it may take repeated viewing to get the most out of this underated movie, but please stick with it. A classy cop movie for grown up's .

I have now been watching this movie 4 times, and after not liking it the least the first time - I kinda love it now. I did not like The Insider, but this movie gets everything right. The acting, the music, the pace. It's all good. But it is not like HEAT (an all time favorite movie), you will not necessarily like it after a single watch. But give it a chance, I like the video-feeling now.. it feels real. Exposed. A nice departure from the visuals of Heat.

 Better second time round.

First time i watched this i hated it. Second time i watched it, i payed attention and realised just how realistic the film is. Of course, you wouldn't just some shooting guns if you were under cover... as people were complaining that the action took a long time to get to, but when it arrives, it's so real and outstanding.

Although i must admit, Colin Farrells acting is poor in this, and the film acts more of a drama sometimes, rather than an action film.
