After I watched it I racked my brains to try and figure out why I didn't enjoy it as much as I expected to. Was it the story line? no, was it the acting? no, the direction? no that wasn't it either. In fact, as an entity, it doesn't deserve some of the slatings it's had, granted not everybody involved's best work but pretty good performances nevertheless. Was I trying to compare it to Heat? no I wasn't. So I left it for a while and watched it again and I figured it out.
I was expecting this film to make the same impact and the same impression on me as the first episode of the TV series, which of course it could never do. When the TV series came out we hadn't seen anything like it before, shot on location like a mini movie, used real music and, although dated now, the coolest cloths worn by any police officer. It was landmark TV and that was the gamble Michael Mann took. If the characters weren't called Crocket and Tubbs and the title wasn't Miami Vice then I would have watched it without any pre-conceptions and would have enjoyed a good crime thriller that was a bit slow on action but stylish, atmospheric and thrilling at times.
utter rubbish!!!!!!

Its awful! All the caffeine in the world couldn't make this film hold your attention. Such a shame, the only thing going for it is the Lynkn Park theme.
REALLY DISSAPPOINTING

I don't think I have ever been more dissappointed with a film, I read loads of stuff on this while the film was being made and that made me hyped up to see the film but I felt really let down by the result.
I had never seen the TV show as I am to young so it wasn't the comparison between these that I felt dissappointed at. It was that with Michael Mann at the helm I really didn't expect to see such a poor film. You just have to look at some of his other films....Collateral, Heat, Ali to name a few and you realise this is a very talented guy so how did he go so wrong here??
Don't get me wrong the film is beautifully shot, but that doesn't really make up for what its lacking in other areas. The two leads Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx have little or no charisma in this film and a lot of the time I couldn't even understand what they were saying! The story is also a bad point as it is underdeveloped and is well below the standards of Michael Manns better films.
Overall a really dissappointing film.
Terrible

The cocaine cowboys of the '80s are gone, but Miami's Casablanca allure, the undercover cops and the attitudes of Michael Mann's culturally influential television series have been enhanced by time in the feature film version of Miami Vice. But I got to say, one of the most dissapointing films i have seen. Micheal Mann had a great start directing Heat but ended it off using jamie foxx and colin farrell. Especially the reason that Jamie Foxx is a great actor, but not the best performance shown in this film.
I enjoyed it.

I loved this film, never saw it in cinema's. Just wanted to see it because Jamie Fox. Personally, dunno if anyone else also had this. I got lost at parts, and some are confusing. But as a hole. Great film.

I must say I kinda looked forward to this one as I always enjoyed the 80s series. I watched the movie by the time it finally came out and was very disappointed. Ok you still have all those good looking people, nice cars, scenic views and the tropical atmosphere is still breathtaking but there is absolutely no storyline and the music that was so significant in the series was mediocre at best. If you just wanna relax and enjoy some Miami footage you will prolly be half-satisfied but don't look for a mindblowing movie here.

I have to say I enjoyed this film, after viewing in the cinema I decided to pick it up on DVD. If you are a fan of Michael Mann as a director then you should definately watch this.
Some of the shots are nice, the characters are reasonably well put together and the shoot outs are realistic.
Not Mann at his best, but still a fine example of the genre

When remaking Miami Vice from its 1980s cop show origins, director Michael Mann effectively had two choices. The nostalgic lampooning of 80's culture route, in much the same as the 2004 remake of Starsky and Hutch did for the 1970's. Considering Michael Mann previous work, particularly in terms of crime thrillers with Manhunter, Heat, The Insider and Collateral, this was never going to be a serious consideration. Rather Mann opted for reinvention, taking the essence of the TV show and adapting it for modern cinema
Inevitably this decision alienated many. Viewed together, the film and Tv incarnations appear to have little other than characters names in common. However there is a fact a far greater degree of continuity between them. Strip away the dated pastel suits, 80's pop star cameos and the verging on self-parody of the later series and your left with gritty police procuderal with an acute sense of style. The 80's TV series was never the crockett and tubbs show, the importance of the case and team was always paramount. All these were elements present and correct in film adaption, yet were perhaps overlooked in the collective memory of popular culture.
Secondly and undoubtedly the film incarnation's most devisive decision, the desire to reinvent the modern cinematic crime thriller itself. An idea not entirely executed as well as it could have been, but one that nonetheless deserves plaudits for its boldness. Miami Vice actively challenges the audiences' preconceptions about the crime thriller. There are numerous instances where the anticipated gunfights and confrontations are suggested but never quite materialise, and when they eventually do it is in a manner quite original for genre. There are no Michael Bay pyrotechniques here, the violence is short, sharp and essentially more real. There are parrallels here with Mann's 1995 crime epic Heat, another film punctuated by short bursts of intense action in between periods of lenghty exposition. Where Heat succeeds in terms of maintaining the tension through intense charecterisation of the films two main protaganists of Pacino's cop and Deniro's robber, Miami Vice ultimately fails. The tepid bland romance between Collin Farrel's Crockett and Gong Li's drug kingpin causes the film to lose its way, only recapturing the tension when the subplot is effectively sidelined for the films climax.
As a film, Miami Vice alienates many and is undoubtedly flawed in some respects. However, when it works, it works extremely well and as such is a wholly original contribution to the crime thriller genre
Very disapointing

So much hype for this movie and was very disapointing. The movie is so slow going and there is not much of a story line. The way it is shot is poor and it is very dark all the way through the film. I would not waste your money
